What Octaine?
Put it this way. If you put 87 octane in your Max, the computer will retard the timing of your Max. When the timing is retarded, you will lose gas mileage to the point that the 87 will actually cost you more than just putting 91+ ocatane in the car. Not only will you pay more for 87, you will lose significant Horse Power.
Who do you think knows more about your car, the company that makes it, or a car salesman? If he new about engines, he would probably be a mechanic! I'm sure Nissan knew that requiring premium fuel isn't a selling point.

Who told you to put Crisco in there? You're supposed to use extra virgin olive oil.

I agree. I said last week we're getting these newbie posts on octane weekly because of no search feature, but now we seem to see them every other day. What a stupid waste of time. Why are you guys answering? Just have the first responder refer the newbie to our FAQ.

Open the free novel Nissan included with your new car. Its about a Spanish guy named "Manual". IIRC he actually ran into this same issue and resolved it successfully.
If you really want the maximum performance out of your car you should burn premium. If you don't drive it all that hard you can probably get away with regular but I would recommend if you do that to keep track of your mileage...if you notice a sharp decline in your mileage you should switch back to premium since your car's timing has been retarded back to the stone age to keep your pistons from going through the oil pan...if your mileage stays ok then you've got nothing to worry about.

I read the book about that guy Manual, it wasn't all that interesting. I was expecting some exciting adventures or something, but no. Honestly, I can't even remember him being mentioned once!
