Urgent - Help - Stillen Rsb Problems

Hey Guys,

I got the Stillen Rear sway bar installed on Tuesday, and the past couple of days that I've been driving the car, I could hear clunking (metal hitting metal) noises when the car went over bumps. I took it back to the place that installed it and they're saying that the bar is hitting the metal thing that the Sway bar is under. Sorry I can't explain it properly, but it's the thing right in the middle on the back side of the car that flexes (it's kind of a half W shape). They said they can't move the bar forward cuz it will crush the ABS lines/sensors and the bar cannot be moved back either. We called Stillen and spoke to them and they're baffled too, cuz they said they've never heard of it. Stillen is blaming it on the fact that my car is lowered.

The car is lowered with Eibach and Tokico Blues. Is there anyone on the forum that has the same set up as my car with a stillen RSB. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the Stillen RSB, but I do know what Stillen is saying is bull crap. The shop should be able to move the bar forwards or backwards. All they have to do is relocate the metal claspe that holds the abs line to the trailing arm. You should've done the install yourself. I'm not mechanically inclined, but it was very easy to install.

This is the second thread that am seeing about a shop messing up on the RSB install.
I did the install myself - I was not so sure that I would be able to handle it - but with help from the org, it was very easy.
I would say screw the shop and try and fix it yourself.
Good luck

That's a total BS from Stillen. I had mine on for more than a year and now w/lower springs. I have no problem whatsoever w/it. Intitally when I first installed the rsb, I experienced the same clunking noise too. It turned out the bracket needed to move further up toward the front so that the sway bar is not directly underneath the beam axel. Below is a link w/pic of the installation.
Print it out and show it to the shop that did the installation for you. Good luck!

Thanks for your input. Actually the car is at the shop and they said, they will try and fix it w/o charging me anything. I would greatly appreciate if someone could email me pictures of how the RSB looks from different angles (esp the main rod). I've looked at the pictures in the 'Installation' thread, but it not the right angle I'm looking for. I'm going to the track this Saturday and need to get this thing fixed before then...thanks again.

the shop installed it wrong. You didn't list what year maxima you have in your profile. I had the same clunking problem cause I didn't know how to take off the brackets that are on the 2k1+ model years. Here are a couple of pics below: (left side of the car)

The two blue brackets should be between the two 10mm bolts that are on the frame of the car

what angle are you looking for? Did you check out the link I'd attached? It has pretty good shots of the rsb on the chassis.

Guys, thanks for all your input. I have a 2K1 5spd.
vmaximus02- Actually the link u sent is great. I guess you and I must have posted our replies at the same time, that's why I didn't see your thread until later. I sent the link to your website to the shop to see that the bar can be moved forward and under the axle to fix the problem.

Thanks again for all your inputs. I will let you guys know if the shop was able to fix it today.

Take care and thanks again.

I had the same problem. They have to move the RSB forward a little so the it's directly under the beam, not passed it. It's no big deal. When the car sits/comes off the lift, a part behind the beem is rubbing w/ your RSB.

What VMaximus02 said is not true. The bar needs to be directly under the axle. Even if it is forward of the axle it's ok just as long as it doesn't go behind it. The clunking noise you hear is the bar hitting the large hinge of the multilink suspension directly behind the axle. In this pic you can see the hinge I am talking about.

PIC

Also the bar is should attach to the clamps so that it drops lower than the axel if it's put on upside down it will be very close to the axel if not touching it which will also make noise at times. Depending on the width of the trailing frame arms the bar may need to be set on a tighter setting to achieve this.
