im with you on the rims, tint and system. dropping the car makes it look tight but i carry alot of people and/or luggage and if my car is lowered it will scrape. thus i dont do it. however, if i was making my car a showcar of course id drop it.

Why would you drop your car...1. It gets rid of that ugly wheel gap, 2.helps car handle alot better and 3. if you buy larger rims then stock i would hope you would lower the car a little.-you will under stand once you have bigger rims

What a newbie question? what kind of question is that? why do you drop your car?

First of all, it definitly enhances the appearance of the car. Second, you'll get rid of some body roll. you'll be able to take corners alot better and your car will be more planted on the floor.

Someone call the GRandPa alert for this guy...

take it easy on him. he hasnt been brainwashed by the "excessive wheel gap" problem of all maximas due to the org. not one person has ever commented on the wheelgap. i ask people and they think i am nuts when i complain about it.

It looks way better and does help with handling. I would do it waay sooner had I realized the difference it would make. I have a 2" drop and I've never scraped.

If you dont notice the wheel gap on a car, with large rims, you are obviously not a car enthusiast. Anyone with any interest in cars notices things like that immediately... I have yet to damage anything underneath my car, and I have about 30k miles on my lowered 2k2....

Actually my car used to bottom out before I got better shocks and springs. Now it doesn't bottom out at all. If you want to float like a butterly that's fine, keep the stock suspension.

Are you gonna damage your car with it lowered driving down normal streets? Nope. Are you gonna cause problems if you hit a speedbump at 20mph. Yes. Solution = Be smart and don't drive like a dumba**.

He did have a point, though - on one of Toronto Maxima meets I've seen a lowered Max with body kit and it couldn't pass mall parking lot speed bumps (small ones) because of too little clearance. In that particular case lowering made the car impractical for everyday use.

He must have cut his springs or have coilovers set real low. Ihave seen many Maxes here dropped and Kitted out, and they go over bumps well. Cwally and I have even taken our Maxes down to Baja California, and as long as you drive with your head screwed on straight , you should be ok.
This thread is pointless.....

I haven't had a problem either and the looks are incredible. I heard a ton of comments about the wheel gap from my friends, even before I started to hate it. Once I lowered and dropped the 18s though, it was a whole new car. I swear the BMW guys at the gym stare and dream....

noticing a wheel gap or not has no relevence to being an "enthusiast" or not. i noticed it, but people are too busy admiring other parts of the max and are not hating on it because of the wheel gap.

Drop the car 1.5 inches and extend the travel by 1.5 inches with a good shock, what is the problem?

I shortened the struts on one of my 510s and added a shortened insert. This allows me to be dropped with shock/wheel travel.

Oh and what is the point?

Lower center of gravity and a choice of suspension settings, asthetic value!

"noticing a wheel gap or not has no relevence to being an "enthusiast" or not."

I don't believe that... The first things I look at is: What car? Is it Dropped? Rims?...etc... Drop has everything to do with an enthusiast... That is one of the most sought after enhancement for a car, besides intake and exhaust. Come on, have you seen any cars go on the track that have a 5 inch wheel gap in the front like our stock maximas from the factory. I don't think so... A drop is crucial, maybe not that important to some, but if you are a true car enthusiast, i mean true, you will look towards a drop!!!

P.S. This thread does suck... we should start a Newbie forum and leave the rest of the forum to us ENTHUSIASTS!!!!!

Okay fellas calm down some areas it's very common to see Maximas with rims on a car that isn't lowered it looks horrible but if you ask them about a drop for the most part they have an old school mentality about dropping there car.

For one thing most believe the ride would be really bad

Another thing when people think of a lowered car they think of civics and neons, eclipes, 95-97 Accords and they like to think the Maxima is more upscale than those cars so they won't drop there cars.

Of course I disagree. I school people all the time once I tell them my car is lowered. Most don't even realized my car is lowered because it's not an extreme 2"+ drop and that is the way I like it

So does a lowered Maxima have disadvantages?....

YES

Does an stock Maxima have disadvantages?...

YES

It all boils down to personal taste and if this person likes his stock 5" wheel gap than fine but brah there are some springs that will give you a decent drop with moderate draw backs to comfort just do it the right way...

Sometimes I think why do we really spend over like around $5,000 to $10,000 making our cars look nice.

I totally agree with PerryMax. I hate the extreme drop on our cars. I like the drop of H&Rs, Eibach, & Maxspeeds because IMO it makes the car look like it should have looked when stock. Any thing more looks ricey.

Dont know if lowering his car caused the problem, but my friend told me that his aligment is all messed up. He also mentioned that his tires are balding on the inside. He stated he need a camber kit(not sure what that is) so it wont mess up the car. I'm getting rims soon and wanted to lower my car. Is this true?

from what i understand about springs... the tires balding on the insides is due to the absence of a camber kit... when u drop a car by more than an inch.. the wheels tend to camber in at the top, which eventually results in uneven wear of the tires.... a camber kit is not absolutely necessary.. but if you have it.. it will probably save you a lot of money on tires, because they will have a more even wear and will last longer...

No uneven wear on two different sets of tires, wheels and springs. You should check your alignment when you drop to make sure your wheels are not 'splayed' out.

the lower u drop it.. the more it cambers in... and so an inch to about 1.5 inches, u probably won't notice it.. maybe around 2.. u should look into getting a camber kit...

On that note, I'd like to add something: I've worked in the automotive aftermarket industry for many years, and when it comes to mods, I can tell you that there are people that lean more towards 1) appearance enhancements, and others towards 2) performance enhancements. But when it comes to lowering, I believe a true balance of the two is required in order to make one's investment worthwhile. Afterall, a great looking, lowered ride that bottoms out all over the place is no fun at all. That's why whenever someone starts a discussion thread about springs or suspension, everbody jumps on the band wagon. I myself have started a few discussion threads, asking questions on the subject, because I wanted just such a balance when I lower my 2k3, which I just got a few months ago (and I really appreciate all you guys for educating me on the subject ). So, I think that the question that Mad Boxer threw out in this thread was done so without truly understanding the concept of lowering. I think after he reads this thread (minus the anger), he might be able appreciate why so many of us are so obsessed with the proper lowering set up's of our Max's.

Hello mad boxer, welcome to maxima lovers, but please do some searches. Why would you think a dropped car will get damaged? I dropped mine many times and nothing damaged or breaks...and many other people here did the same. also cars that dropped with very good suspensions can carry more weight, because of stiffer spring rates...

so what will damage?.

2k2 Max se on H&Rs and 18x8s

I've had this set up on my car for over 32,000 miles with no problems. I have oem shocks still on the front with KYBs on the rear. No bottoming out, no rubbing, and close to stock ride. Before with factory setup the ride was aweful. Floating and somewhat out of control feeling with the power of this car makes you think. I installed the H&Rs for performance issues and man the improvement was amazing. So much so that I've past my warrantee because of all the miles I put on my ride. H&Rs will give you the least amount of drop but the improvement in handling is well worth it. Subtle and understated plus the appearence is great.
