Problem removing oil filter

Hey,

I'm trying to pull off the oil filter using an oil filter cap wrench, but the wrench is not gripping the filter. I've got the right wrench, which worked just fine the last oil change, but it just won't grab the filter the time (it slides around the filter). Anybody know of any other alternatives to the wrench (obviously hand turning doesn't work). Thanks.

Use a band wrench that goes around the body of the filter, you get a better grip and can get closer to the threads for more torque. Also. be sure you're turning it the right way, it's easy to turn it the wrong way when lying underneath a car.

I haven't seen any band wrench small enough to fit tightly around the filter.

When this happens to me I tape sandpaper inside the oil wrench to get a better grip on the oil filter. Try that.

Better parts stores carry them. I use one made by KD tools. It's really small and fits tightly.

I had the same prob on my 97. I tried a band wrench made
by alltrade (package comes in two sizes). It worked
perfectly on the small filter. I have no idea where it
was purchased because I received it as a gift. I'm about
to change the oil on my wifes 03 so I'll see how it goes.(first
oil change).

A big set of channel locks gets my filter off every time.

Use a sledge hammer and a chisel.

Since you're throwing it out, just punch a screwdriver into the side and turn it with that.

Believe it or not he's not kidding. This does work. Maybe you need to buy the kind of oil filter wrench than i slike a pair of scissor with teeth on the inside. I've never had an oil filter NOT come off with these. Get the samller version (there are usually 2 sizes in the store). Tha Max filter is kinda puny.

Thanks for all the help. I found some sticky adhesive tape and applied it to the filter to stop the cap wrench from sliding. And what do you know, it came off. Sometimes it pays to use your brain.
