the max's auto was never and will never be strong...i have no faith in it. my friend has gone through SIX Maxima auto trannies, and while im sure its his fault, it just goes to show they dont take abuse well. i think the solution to this problem is simply a tranny "upgrade" or a computer fix. manually rowing through an auto's gears is just a bad idea, especially while racing.
I just use it for the 1-2 change, then I put er back in "D". Even still, I will agree that the tranny isnt strong at all. I was thinkin of getting a VB mod to make it shift faster to help aid in the life of my tranny.

BTW: Who knows how to reprogram the tranny's computer?

any real racer knows that.
Never understood this, who granny shifts or double clutches when they race. Double clutching is for smoother shifts but takes 2 times as long.

I agree. That's why I want standard.

It is like 500 or so rpm lower than in all the other gears (at least on my car). So, when second engages, its a bit below the sweet spot in the powerband and the acceleration feels soft. I will go ahead and use my Gtech to see if the manual shift in 1st gear actually helps the 0-60 sprint. Most people who shift their autos manually only do so when racing, not all the time.
last year at the track, leaving the car in D got consistent 15.8 timeslips. manually shifting 1-2 at ~6200rpm got 15.4.

manually shifting the auto benefits in a race since you're able to make use of the 2000-2001 peak power, which is near redline.

as for the 2002-2003, i don't know if manually shifting the auto helps any since the HP peaks lower than the VQ30.

What about going down a big hill?
Is it ok to put the Auto in 1st or 2nd to get engine braking to keep the same speed without having to keep pressing the brake?

i manually shift my auto only when i'm racing... and i dont let off the gas... it "feels" a little faster since i'm shifting at a slight higher rpm which puts me in a higher rpm band after the shifts... but i've never really timed it both ways.... doesn't seem like it would be that bad for the tranny tho... by manually shifting, aren't i essentially doing the same thing as if the car shifted for me in D, just a little later?

"Powershifting does very little in terms of better ETs. If you're quick with the shift, clutch, and gas you'll be fine. Powershifting is HORRIBLE for the tranny, but if you insist go ahead and see how long it takes before you syncros become worn and start to grind or sheer that 2nd or 3rd gear. I've spent A LOT of time behind of the wheels of multiple 5.0s. EVERY single 5.0 that's been powershifted grinds in 2nd and 3rd. Many of my 5.0 friends have been through a few trannies also and they're not pushing massive power either (250-270rwhp)."

Sounds like your friends don't know how to drive a Stang...

5.0 manual transmissions are decent and will handle power up to around 350hp. I never wore one out but I didn't race the car constantly either. It was a daily driver that I raced occasionally. The only reason you would tear up 2-3 gear is if you were poor at shifting. I kept my last Stang until almost 100k miles, I put one clutch in it during that time but it shifted as good when I got rid of it as it did when I bought it and I NEVER ground the gears during a gear change. It is difficult to do the 2-3 shift smoothly and quickly and if you get it wrong you WILL tear up your transmission.

I don't know about the Maxima 5 or 6 speed transmissions. I have an auto and I don't plan on racing it or running it excessively hard.

Every Vette I've been in that has over 70k miles on it has just been falling apart. The transmissions and engines may be great but the rest of the car is a horrible unreliable mess!!!

I've noticed on my 2K3 that the 3-D (left-right) is in the same slot. I've tried putting it into 3 and giving a little gas then back on D when I reached like 100, I think the car moves a lil quicker (you can feel the hard pull of the VQ35DE) didnt feel any hesitation nor any bangin into gears. But I wouldnt do this everytime I felt the need to drive hard.
