anyone have this happen to their Max?
Hey guys,
On the way to work today, I stopped at a light (it was on an incline). I was inserting a CD into the BOSE, and wasn't paying attention fully, and ended up stalling the car when the light turned green...No problem, I just stepped on the clutch, turned the ignition, and got going again. Here's where the weird thing happened...
Basically, the car would buck when I was giving it gas. I got into 3rd gear, and when it hit roughly 2200 rpms, it would buck REALLY badly. I was afraid to give it any more gas, so I don't know what would happen at even higher rpms. I tried shifting through the gears again, thinking that perhaps the shifter wasn't fully in the gate or something, but that didn't help. I drove like this for maybe 20-30 seconds, and then pulled over, and shut the car off. I waited about a minute, turned the car on, and everything was back to normal again.
Any idea what this could've been? Some computer malfunction? I'm pretty sure it had to do with the stall, but I have no idea what it could be exactly.
Thanks

Vito,
<joke> This is because the Max uses Microsoft Windows AE (Auto Edition).
In your case, stalling caused an incomplete shutdown of the Windows AE system (a "crash"). Once the car is started, you should immediately perform an orderly shutdown (by turning the car off) to allow all processes to close normally. When you then restart the car, all processes will operate normally again.
This problem has been identified and is scheduled for resolution in a future service pack. Until that point, remember to perform an orderly shutdown after the car crashes. </joke>

Could it really have been some computer/sensor fluke?
This used to happend to me when I drove the car in 1st gear around 2200 rpms when the engine wasn't warmed up yet. Hasn't happend lately. I know it has something to do with my Injen CAI because it never happened with my Berk intake.
So, this means that my MAF was having problems??

It happened to me.
I only had a few hundred miles on the car and I was still in the break in stage. I ran it up to 5000 rpm just to see what it would do since I really hadn't opened it up. 3.5 power is awesome the first time you feel it. I slowed down and pulled up to a stop light. All seemed fine, but as soon as the light turned green I started having problems. This was my first manual tranny and the car stalled when I tried to take off. I started it back up again but at idle the tach was bouncing. It was bucking really badly and it was difficult to get the car going. I made it to a parking lot out of shear determination. I turned the car off trying to figure out what I did wrong. I couldn't figure it out so I started it back up again. Almost as soon as I got out of the parking lot it started bucking again. I drove maybe 50 feet to a sideroad and parked the car. At idle the tach was popping anywhere from 0 to 1000 rpm. I turned it off and tried to decide whether to call my Father-in-law or a tow truck. After waiting for 5 minutes I gave it another shot. The car started fine and idle was back to normal. I kept expecting it to do it again but I haven't had a problem since.

Drove home, switched it off, and re-started - problem vanished, and hasn't reappeared in 7k miles... Sunspots...?
It happened to my automatic 97 SE last night. Stop light on a slight incline. Car starts bucking and nearly stalls. Pulled over, shut off car, made a u-turn to head home and the car ran fine. Ran fine to work this morning too.
My stalling was accompanied by cloud of foul smelling milky exhaust. Anything sketchy with your exhaust?

CEL = Check Engine Light. Doh! I'm alittle slow with the acronyms.
Actually, I did not trip the CEL. Car ran fine a minute afterwards and have had no problems since. It scares me a little however. I may want to check the ECU regardless. Any idea what may be behind this? Posts suggest MAF problems for the stalling, but I can't explain the exhaust. I did lose my heat shield recently, but that should not be a problem.

I've stalled the car 1 or 2 times (must've been those sunspots, cuz I know how to shift!) and when I've re-started the engine and started to drive, the car bucked like mad!
What I did was punch the clutch and soon as I did that, it calmed down back to normal idle...
I always figured that stalling the engine out left some fuel/fuel vapors in the intake or sumptin... and then turning it back on caused the leftover fuel to ignite... JMO though...
it happened to me in my 2k 5 spd also. just once, but it happened. this was about 15k ago, amd it hasn't happened since. dunno.

Damn, someone sure dug this one up from the graveyard!
When it happened to me, I'm not sure how much gas was in the tank, but it was definitely not close to empty. This hasn't happened since (although I haven't stalled since), so I think it may be something with the improper "shutdown" of the car's computer, along with its gazillion sensors. As long as it doesn't ever come back, I'm not worried!

Keeping your car nice in Boston is like banging your head against the wall. None of that body damage was my fault, DON'T ever live across from a tanning salon and park on street.
