03 Auto Transmission Whine

Just bought a 03 GXE to replace my 1989 GXE (14 years, 115,000 miles, still ran great) I am very impressed with the 03, especially the power. One thing bothers me though, when accelerating at a leisurely speed, the 4 speed auto transmission makes a high pitched whine from about 15 to 35-40 mph. It is not real loud and is not noticable if the stereo is on or on a noisy city street (that's why I did not hear it on the test drive). But on a quiet street it is a little annoying. I find it hard to believe Nissan would design it that way. The 89 GXE did not make that noise. Any one have that problem or is it just the way the car sounds?

It's probobly just the gears spinning up. All tranny's do that (I think). Maybe you got a bad auto. Congrats on buying your 2k3.

Strange. I don't think I have this problem. I do occasionally hear the whine of the belts and obviously, my intake, but not the tranny.

You may want to get that checked out since you just bought it.

Congrats on the 03!

sounds like plain old gear whine. my 2k2 auto has it too. i took it to the dealer, but it didn't seem like there was much they could do about it. i don't think it's bad for the car...just probably a matter of luck. i notice it some cars, and not in others. i dont know, transmission bearings making the noise? good luck.

I remember my 00 gxe had this problem. The Screech was very loud, I mean you could hear it from a block away. And sometimes the gears would slip, however i took it to the dealer and they said that it was part of the break in process. So i left it alone. Problem never went away. Had the car for 2 years. So I turned in the car and got my 03 max se.. cheers

I have the same thing, I believe. I think it's just gear whine. Oh well, nothing a new muffler and subs won't drown out.

does anyone know what exactly causes it? is it completely random? i've been in economy cars that didn't make gear whine, but i remember my mother's lexus exhibiting it. that leads me to believe that it can happen to any car at any price. it seems to have gone away lately though.

Thanks for all the input. I talked to the head service tech at the dealer and he said there had not been any problems with the transmission that he knew of. He recommended I just keep an eye (ear?) on it and if it got worse it is under warranty. It only has 600 miles on it so it may get better, if not then back to the service department. It's a new car so I am sensitve to any noise that I am not familiar with. This forum is great and I am proud to be a MAXIMA owner since 1989 (Datsun owner since 1973, had a 610 for 9 years; an '81 310 for 8 years; anybody remember those models?) Guess I'm showing my age but I've been a Nissan fan for a long time.
