2k / 2k2 taillight swap

Ok, I searched using the "SEARCH" feature and I scoured the "How-To's..." and can't find my answers. If I overlooked it, please accept my sincerest apologies in advance.

As some of you know, hombre & I will be swapping our taillights in the very near future. Can some of you whom have already done this mod please offer tips and advice to make the job as easy as possible? Also, if you know where a "HOW-TO" for this mod is, could you please provide a link?

Thank you in advance.

take out the lugs.. there should only be like 3 or 4 on each side.... and push from the inside with all your might... you should see the silicon starting to split.... then start pulling from the outside... it should slowly start to come out.... when its time to put it back in... there should stil be enough sealant on the edges.. so you won't realy need to put more...

Your also goin to need to get a new harness for the bulbs .. i replaced my 03 clears with the 01 reds .. i didnt spring for a new harness cuz i'm cheap =-x i just used electrical tape on it and made the one that was too small thicker so it just fit in there and stayed .. it might take a lil work to get the light off .. just take it easy .. i used a hammer to knock on the screws from the back while pulling it out and it worked .. and i'm happy with the results .. hehe hope that helped and if not i tried =-]

Thank you both for the info. One more quick question:

When we take the fixtures out, I recall someone saying (in a previous post) to cut the wires and send the proper bulb harnesses w/the fixtures. Is that right?

There's no need to cut. Just unplug the old harness and plug in the new one.

It should swap out evenly...there is no difference except for the chrome ring on the outside.
I put the 2k2 on my 2000 car and there was no rewiring.

No you don't. It's a direct swap.

Just make sure after you remove the 4 bolts, you push REALLY hard. I actually crawled in my trunk and pushed them out with my feet using my whole body as weight.

So, did you tear up any of the trunk liner clips in the process?

Ok, went out and got a fresh tube of 3M black windshield adhesive and did this swap today. Plug and play, no big deal, my wiring harness for the trailer lites was tied into the wiring harness on the drivers side lite so green wire was cut and rest of it transferred to the Sunlite Sand 2002.

One item of interest, on the 2000 there was a gray electrical plug undone done in the quarter panel. Not sure what it's for but I plugged in back in. My rear defroster has never seemed to work so I'm hoping I just fixed it. The 2002 did not have this harness and plug.

Anyway very easy swap, need a flat blade screw driver and 8mm wrench. My one problem is that my wife hates the 2002 brights on the white 2000 SE. The black trim and splash guards do stand out on this car when it's clean so I kind of can't blame her, especially since since this her driver now.

Any one want to swap 2002 brights for 2001 dark SE tails? Will include the wiring harness.

This car is going in the shop for a couple of days for some basic work so I'd like to get this done if anyone's interested.

You bumped a 6 year old thread to ask a silly question?

I was getting ready to do this swap and was using the search function to gather info. The thought of someone laying in their trunk pushing out taillites struck me as funny. Also, in the process of doing this swap one must remove the trunk liner clips. I know is some instances this destroys them, just wondering if that would be the case ahead of time.

As this thread is titled "2K / 2K2 taillight swap" and that is what I did, it was my intent that any new insight I could bring to this swap would be of future value.

Now any idea what that gray plug was in the 2000 quarter panel? If you could tell me that, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
