I've done changes every 3K, so I skipped the 1K change.
forgot
i forgot when i did my first oil change but all i gotta say is change it when they first tell you to. i think i did mine at 800 or something. but don't put none of that slick 50 or duralube in untill after 10k miles or else your engine will never fully break in and then you're screwed. oh i heard amsoil is good stuff. people refer to is as cheap redline. but i'm running quaker state synthetics because mobile one reformulated their synthetics and it's booty and i'm too lazy to get amsoil and too broke to get redline
Well, Redline and Amsoil are just as
expensive with similar product lines.
The main difference I have seen between them is Amsoil goes a lot further into details of their products than Redline....i.e. they have a good deal of proof of how their products stack up against others (Mobile 1, etc.). Meanwhile, Redline must rely mostly on "reputation".
Sorry, but I do like to see some numbers if Redline is that great.
I'm sure Redline is as good as Amsoil, but I would like to see proof.
With the right Amsoil oil, your good for 25k drain intervals with an oil filter change at 12.5k.

Re: Re: I use the nissan filter
i get my oil change from the dealer but only because i bought that service plan. i did all my oil changes on my own. even when i take my car to the dealer, i take my own oil. i just go to them for the oem oil filter and labor. i take mobil 1 tri-synthetic. i change my oil every 3k.

Try Sams Club if U have it in your area, Try COSCO, or BJzz. these are all wholesale places.. the price may not be too much different then BEB BOYZ or Wal-Mart for that matter. The Factory Oil is Either Kendall or Havoline.. I use a Nissan Filter. if U don't like the Nissan Filter then the next 1 would be Pure1 from Puralator (or however U spell it).. There was a link on peelboys page from a Post Russ put on about compairing Oil filters. If Russ or any of U guys read this and would be kind to post the link here it'll help.

I change my oil every 4000 miles or so. I didn't do the 1000 mile oil change, but thinking back, I should have. Can't hurt, right? I also use the dino juice...synthetics are only worth it if you use the extended intervals (like every 7500 miles).
Regarding 3000 mile oil changes...if you drive mostly city then that's a good idea. However, newer oils are way better than oils from like 15 years ago so they almost certainly last more than 3000 miles without much wear. So while back in the day the "every 3000 miles" rule was sound, today it's a little overkill. In fact, consumers reports did a test and found almost no difference between 3000 or 6000 mile oil change intervals (although they did use Taxi cabs, whose engines never really get cold). So, don't think you'll kill the car if you change your oil every 5000 miles. You won't. But then, it never hurts a car to change the oil either.

I change my oil every 3K miles and use Mobil 1.I know thats overkill to change a synthetic every 3K but I don't put a lot of miles on my Max (31K miles in over 5 years).
I changed my oil the first time at 1500 miles but in retrospect I don't think I needed to. I doubt if Nissan would put crap oil to break in their products. After all, they have to cover warranty on these things.
I happened to have changed the oil on my Max today and while servicing the oil I took a flashlight and looked into the oil filler area at the internal engine. I couldn't see much, mainly half of a valve and a bit of the cam but it was really clean in there, real nice to see.

As a mechanical engineer dealing alot with heavy rotating equipment, I've learned alot about lubes. I think the best oil you can run in your Maxima is 0W-30. Skeptics, stick with me! Those of you in colder climates will appreciate the cold start advantages of this oil (The W number is smaller therefore less viscous in cold temps). Those in warmer climates will see no difference under normal operating conditions (Second number the same). Under extreme conditions (racing, etc) this oil actually provides better wear protection than the factory recommended 5W-30.
If you want to run 5W-30, don't waste your cash on synthetic, go conventional with shorter change intervals. The main advantage of a synthetic is that stands up longer. The additive packages are usally similar to conventional oil and offer little (or no) advantage. Because dirt builds up in your oil regardless of whether it is syn or conventional, you still want to change your oil every 3k mi.
Obviously, you take a risk going against factory recommendations and I won't take responsability for it but I can honestly tell you that I run Esso/Exxon 0W-30 in my 2000 SE. My car will run better for longer, cold Canadian starts will not be a problem and I am better protected when hard driving. You wouldn't want to do this with older engines but the tolerances and finish on a new engine make this no problem.
Don't buy it? Call an industrial lubrication specialist with a major oil company. Don't bother askin the punks at Mr. Lube.
