are my rims 17" or 18.5"?

i just got a fully loaded 2000 maxima SE. people have been telling me that my rims are 17". i measured the diameter and got 18.5". so who's right? did i measure them wrong?

There is no such thing as an 18.5" wide wheel. You obviously measured wrong.

The wheel is measured from the inside of the lip where the tire bead rides. The outer lip sticks up from this to keep the tire bead from slipping off the wheel. That is where your difference is coming from.
