2nd day new car got pulled over

this is some bs...i got pulled over this morning andthe police said i was goin pretty fast....yeah i was i was reall late for my class...but the thing is he didnt have a radar detector on him and said that he had to go 80mph to catch up with me....of course you gotta go that fast if youre half a mile back tryin to catch up when the speed limit is 45mph...well on the ticket it didnt say how fast i was goin or what the speed limit was but he just put down

"going faster then reasonable"

please tell me what this BS is can they do that? pull you over cuz they 'THINK' you were speedin

If they shadow/follow you over a certain amount of miles, they can calculate how fast you were going by simple arithmatic.

but heres the catch....once i spotted him on the rear view mirror he was about 1000ft away and by that tiem i was doin way below speed limit due to cars in front of me.... yes i did speed a bit but i dont see how it is reasonable for him to pull me over without using a radar or anything just based on reason

Is it reasonable for him to pull you over because you were above the speed limit?

I've had that happen to me as well. However, I fought it on the spot and he didn't have a choice but to give me a "warning". Fight it in front of the judge. Even if you end up getting a fine it will be significantly lower, trust me I speak from plenty of experience (unfortunately)

in NY this type of ticket gets dismissed in court...I had one once....a bunch of years back my father and I (yes he was driving) were racing some old dude in a drop top MB SL series against my then 92 Maxima.......we were racing him on Northern Blvd in Great Neck over here in NY (main throughfare-city street) and a cop ducked out of a private block and followed us till we hit a light. then the ***** proceeded to turn on her lights after the traffic light turned green and pulled us over.

Just like you, she had no radar but she said we were going "pretty fast"..... well court time came round, and we told the judge she had no radar on, how could she truly know how fast we were going?? I asked for speedo accuracy on her part, yada yada yada...

end of story-- ticket dismissed

If you go to court and play it smart, this will get dismissed. Don't get cocky and hot headed, just polite and question it. The only way he can give you a ticket with no radar is by following you to match your speed and reading it from his speedo. In this case, just tell the judge exactly what you said here (if it's true). The cop said "I had to go 80mph just to catch up with you". Case closed.

First off... lay off the "stupid cops" remarks. Really. He was speeding and the officer wanted to pull him over. Each state has its own version of law that allows him to go whatever speed he wants to enforce the law. Here in Illinois, for example, a friend of mine who is a trooper showed me in the 'book' how it stated that he is allowed to exceed the speed limit in the carrying out of his duties. So not a surprise that the cop sped up to catch you.

Second, this has been debated before, but an officer CAN stop you and CAN give you a ticket for excessive speed WITHOUT having to state a specific number. Excessive speed is anything the officer feels is valid for the underlying conditions (the speed limit in the zone, the type of zone - residential vs commercial, the weather conditions out, etc). If he does his job he will annotate all of this so it won't be "throw out" in court.

You SHOULD go to court and plea your case... the usual result as some have stated is that it 'could' be reduced or tossed out (here in IL they have 'supervision').

Next time slow down! And if you speed and get pulled over, don't complain about it... admit your fault and deal with it!

"cops" and "stupid" or "cops" and "donuts" is just like saying "peanut butter" and "jelly"

Ah, I see... no respect for law enforcement.

Stereotypical and prejudiced.

Whatever, man... it's a free country.

Here in Chitown it's the same... fat cops, donut cops, etc... just don't like to stereotype ALL of them... especially if I was speeding and got nailed. At this time in my life, I just laugh and accept my 'lumps'.
