How does a Powered Sub work?

I think I remember one of you guys hooking up a powered sub to the factory Bose system.

1. How does a powered sub work?
2. And how do you install it??
3. Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages???

Thanks.

If you don't get full answers here, this is the exact type of question the AUDIO forum is good for....

Get the infinity basslink. Sounds great. Look on e-bay. Dirt cheap right now and $60 to install. Sounds great with the bose system. I took out the Bose sub and used the hole as a port.

It works by having an amp mounted in the box. Basically the infinity basslink is an amp and sub mounted in the same box. You run power and signal to it and you are set.

Advantage is that it is small and in one container.
Disadvantage is that it will never be as loud as a dedicated amp/sub combo with a well designed box.
