It is something you do on 10 second hondas and 18 wheel trucks. Some dump trucks/garbage trucks too.

yep, some big trucks have lots of gears. After you pass 1-5 you double clutch to get to 6-10. Its to avoid having a 10 position gearshift. As for the FnF??? just some BS that sounds cool I guess unless they have some super tranny.

I thought it was releasing the clutch while in nuetral (between shifts) and stepping on the gas to get the intermediate shaft up to the speed you want it at (so that it meshes better with the gears)...apparently this is what syncros do in transmissions - I may be wrong though.

dont you get slower time if you do that at the track?, that sounds so stupid, to put it in neutral before every gear and to rev it up to around the rpms in the next gear you put it in

I hear ya - but apparently from what I've heard this is race style shifting - I know I'm not that coordinated to accelerate as fast with an extra move.

double-clutching is what the muscle car racers had to do(some still do) because they didnt have the synchro trannys that we have now. Double clutching is simply a method to get it out of a gear(clutch #1) and put it back into a gear(clutch #2). When going into a less powerful gear, this gives the driver a moment to rev the engine to a more suitable RPM.

ok, so double clutching is not something that will cut down the 1/4mile time, or something we should adopt in our driving then?

FNF-Please, are we taking lessons from Hollywood on how to drive?

If I'm not mistaken don't most (if not all) cop cars have auto transmissions?

Whenever I drive an old "deuce and a half" - 2.5 ton Army truck - I have to double-clutch to downshift going up hills. It helps avoid grinding the gears.

All it basically is... is pressing the clutch in once to disengage as you start to shift, and while shifting, releasing and pressing the clutch in again to synch the tranny.

If you double clutch with synchronized gears you're wasting time. If the gears are straight cut (non synchro) then you either double clutch or powershift. If you try to power shift synchronized gears you'll trash the synchros, either on the upshifts or the downshifts (it will shift smoothly in one direction, but not the other). There's nothing like powershifting a good race gearbox or bike.

Bottom line, just shift "normally" your max.
