Car problems

Hey guys. . its been a while since I've been on the .org but I am having a problem with my car and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I have a 2k2, 6 speed w/ 30,000 miles. I have already had my mass air flow sensor replaced so I know what that is like. But I am having a different sort of related problem. I have noticed that while I am accelerating that my RPM range has drastically changed. When I accelerate, my car does not kick like it used to. But instead the RPM's shoot up to 5500 or 6500 and then die down and then the car takes off. THis happens every time. It is most noticable when I am in reverse and then I switch to first on the roll. . the car keeps going backwards becuase it just doesnt get the kick for a few seconds until after it screeches the RPM range. Also, I have noted a horrible smell coming from the engine bay at times. Almost like a burning or something. Hard to explain. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any help would be appreciated.

Why would you be going from R to 1st that aggressively? Are you sure you didn't do some damage/buring to the clutch or tranny? A burned clutch makes rather unpleasant odors.

A slipping and burning clutch would be my guess.

when you are shifting from R to 1, you have to completely stop the car...otherwise the gears grind and tranny goes to h*ll

Try this. accelerate to about 40 mph and put the car in 6th gear and floor it. If the car is not accelerating like normal and the rpms are going up it is proably your clutch slipping.
