injen+custom air scoop and air box=?

.org,
what do you guys/gals think of using an injen intake then cutting the plastic under where the filter sits (behind the radiator) and installing a custom ram air scoop and air box, would too much water/ dirt/mud get in it and cause a problem? or would it be the shiznit to have a nice cold air system from an intake and a ghetto fabrication?
i am thinking about doing this when i get my injen
any other thoughts?

hmmmm......

well, i guess it's all in how big the scoop hole will be. i would make the hole small since it would jus' be cool air coming in, and and the bigger the hole, the bigger the target! also, i would probably put some type of screen to block really big things from going inside and hittin' the filter. i was also thinking of putting some kind of exhaust wrap around the tubing, jus' to keep it insulated and keep the air nice and cool as can be. what i want to know is, could you get the heatshield? i mean, is there enough clearance for it to fit where the filter sits? hmmm......jus' my 2cents....

I just took off the whole cover piece. Haven't had any problems since then and that was about 8K miles ago. I wouldn't worry about big pieces because your filter is not going to suck them up anyhow. The worst case scenario is water in the filter, but after some thinking the water would have to totally soak the filter, get through the filter, and get sucked all the way in the throttle body..that's a long way. So I am not worried, just don't immerse the filter in water and you should be fine.

Re: hmmmm......

I was thinking the same thing about the heat shield. Also, considering that the filter I am using is bigger than the Injen filter that came with it.

Try to make a scoop that goes around the radiator. Also, get some header wrap tape, and wrap the injen up. These two things should get cool air under the hood and to the filter and should insulate the intake tube (at the expense of looks) from underhood heat.

not that a big piece is going to get sucked up by the filter, but a big piece can certainly HIT the filter, which could also be bad. just a thought. oh, and mjg, thanks, but those aren't enkei's, they're OZ superleggerra's. but doing a lil' research, and askin' around, i heard that the injen doesn't really help out on the top end (don't believe manufacturer's dyno's). from what i understand, the vq35 already sucks in a lot of air, but the longer pipe doesn't help either. hmmm, jus' a thought...
