Tranny service

Is servicing the tranny just changing the fluid? Is there a write up on this ---

What kinda of fluid do you guys use -regular,synthetic - what name brand?

And, what do you guys think of the additives like Slick 50, or Dura lube for the tranny?

How many quarts, where do you buy this stuff? Is this regular or synthetic?

So, just pull the plug and drain the fluid? Then put more in - gotta be more to it than that? Dealership charging too much $$$ for it to just be that

A tranny flush, other than the dealership, would go around $70-$80. That would be using regular tranny oil. I imagine that a synthetic flush would easilly go over $100.00. A regular fluid change would only cost a fraction. I have seen advertised specials of $15-$20 for labor plus the cost of the tranny fluid. I have done my own tranny fluid change by just draining 4 quarts, fill-up with 4 quarts of Mobile 1 Synthetic ($5.00/quart at Autozone, Pep Boys, Kragen, Wal-Mart, etc.) and repeat two more times (or three if you feel like it) after about 100-150 mile interval. Thats about a week or so driving for me. Then I do it again around 20,000-25,000 miles. It is not close to what a complete flush can do but it should replace about 80% of the fluid in the tranny. Plus it is more a therapeutic thing for me. Servicing it myself and knowing what is really being put in the car. All you do is raise the car, look for the drain plug, remove plug and start draining. For each process, it will drain about 4 quarts. It is actually easier than an oil change as there is no filter to change. There is a write-up somewhere about doing your own tranny flush as opposed to a drain. I tried doing a search but the search engine seems to be acting up at this time. Hope this helps.

On if you have a manual or an auto, either way in the how to section there are writeups.
