Just curious, but how does the hard drive and cpu components stand up to the 120+ degree heat of a car toasting in the summer sun?
Seems like a conventional hard drive would crap out after baking in such high temps...

Not really.. most hd's run very hot even in your case right now. A lot of computers run @ 100+ degrees in the case anyway, so being in a 120 degree car will be nothing new. Besides, before it can run too long you've probably got the A/C cranked and it'll be a nice frosty 72 degrees in there before long.

the 2 biggest manufactors of touch tone screens are xenoarc whiich are nicer and some of the monitors u can still see them during direct sunlight ? then theres digital wide world which isnt as great as xenoarc but also not as expensive. try getting s video or vga ones.

next im gonna try to make my analog ac controls its digital controls via my pc in my maxima. any suggestions on how to go about this?

and for the hd question posted earlier i use laptop hard drives little more expensive but a little bit more rugged.

That new band 'no signal' rocks!

I like where you are going with the screen mounting.

#1 thing is to get a good DC-DC powersupply/regulation... or all your nice stuff will be toast in a few months. well, the PSU at least.

I was *this* close to getting in on that group deal with the Xenarcs on mp3car.com. So glad I didnt, Xenarc seems to have sent those guys refurbs or something :/

I was considering that NTSC screen from digitalww. I'd love VGA, but not sure I want the hassles of a full blown PC right now. Well, I'd probably get a Cap.TX1 so I guess thats not too much hassle..

oh ya that power supply thing is pretty important. oh ya and learn hoew to use fiberglass youll need to make the mold that does around the screen since it wont fit in perfectly and you have to take the casing around the screen to make it work rt.

NO SIGNAL is the new single of my new record.

That's true, but there's a big difference between internal case temp. in a reasonable ambient temp., and internal case temp. in an ambient of 100+ degrees. The HD and system would either shut down or cook pretty quickly.

But, won't hurt the HD etc. if it's not running in the heat (presumably it switches off with the car? how'd you arrange it so it shuts down gracefully?), and as bobcat noted it should cool off even in the trunk.

there are some DC-DC automotive PSUs that handle shutdown, very nice but not cheap. Worth every penny tho.

I've read mixed results on 3.5 desktop HD's in the trunk. Generally, bad PSU's or a nasty pothole gets them before heat.

thats so true about pot it will mess with your hard drive quicker than the heat. think of a hard drive as a record as the needle goes accross the record and when it jumps it sctaches it. the end. thats y i use laptop harddrives they are smaller and dont generate as much heat and i have fans coming out of my tailpipes.

this is the pc for my car that i want to get

Where did you get that dash kit to fit the screen in?

What would you guys think of running voice recognition on a pc instead of hooking it up to an lcd? I really don't want to change the HU and put an lcd in. Would this just be a pain or would it work alright?

If you don't want a full LCD there is also little LEDs that work with Winamp (w/ a plugin) and will display the song/artist/etc on the LED. Some of those you can also control Winamp w/ buttons on the screen or use a remote control to do it. I'm not sure how well voice recognition would work.

Buut, with as many mp3 players that are out there.. for me, it'd be a waste to put a PC in there and not have a screen to watch stuff on. For just music seems kind of a waste when I could go get a mp3 player for just about as much.

you need to take the lcd toch tone screen apart and then make a fiberglass mold that goes around the screen and will fit perfectly on the car so it wont look cheesey.

Here are the 2 reasons that I'd do the computer mod for that I don't have.

1. If I had the ability to pay attention to 2 things at once. Two reasons why I'd want that ( )

2. I like my computer at home and I think adding all that computer stuff + audio stuff would add to much waight.

I'm not dissin you MAX GUY but that's what I just think.
