I took my car to the dealer earlier this month for ECU update. I bought the car with 37K miles so I had to pay out of my pocket. Well, my car stalls most of the time whenever I come to stops.
My idling was like (still is) 0.57-0.62K rpm. I told the service manager that my car's idling a bit low, I like to get it pumped up a little. So he was like let we have a look we'll tell you. 20 mins later, he called me in the office and told me that my car needed an ECU update. The check-up fee was $90 and the reprogramming fee was $95. Total was almost $200.
That was for what, less than 20 mins and they charged me $90, bastards.
Anyway, when I got the car back the idling is still the same. So I asked them to bump it up a bit. The the service manager told me that his tech said the idling cannot be adjusted. It's controlled by the ECU.
Now for those with 2k/2k1 particularly 5 speed, where did you get your idling done at? Dealership? By the consult II right?
So I took it home and the car was fine, a bit better but still giving me that stalling problem. That's why I decided to take it back to them.
I came today again, told them that my (org) friends said that idling rpm CAN BE ADJUSTED. He's still denying it and also mentioning me his tech works for nissan 29 years.
He told me to bring the car in tomorrow so he can have a look. I then asked him a hypothetical question, what if it was not the ECU needed to be re-programmed, am i gonna get discount or anything on the new repair beacuse I didn't ask for the ECU programming, I only asked for the stalling engine to be fixed. He said he don't know, and he won't know if it's only a hypothetical question. Fric&*^)*&^) a$$ ... I'm so ****ed off ....

I'm not 100% on the 2k, but you should be able to set idle in the ECU with the Consult II without a problem. It's adjustable on the 2k3. Maybe the tech has been a tech too long and doesn't know/wanna know computers or how to use them.

They are full of ****. You can adjust the timing up to 3 degrees and the idle as well but no more then +/- 75 I belive. Only the consult-II can be used and for the 3.5's the timing advance will nly give a little kick up to 3K after that the variabel timing will pull it back to normal.

Do you have 'Servise Engine Soon' light on? If yes, then get to autozone for free diagnostics. Will save you 90$ check-up fee, and they will tell you what the problem is, or at least what ECU says the problem is

BTW, reseting the ECU is always a good idea (just disconnect the battery for a few hours), it might help.

I have 2k max. I don' know it would make any difference. I just called Nissan Consumer Affairs to complain about this dealership. The person there asked me if I tried to talk to the service manager about my problem. I told him that was the manager, he started laughing - he felt my pain. He told me to fax the work order for him and give him a call after the trip to that dealership tomorrow. Thanks, i'll let you guys know.

some guy (insert name here) I dont remember his name but he was like 40 something. He said he bought the consult II at a pawn shot which is BS. I think he worked at nissan and borrowed it for a few days or something. He never addmitted it though.
your main concern is the engine stalling, not the RPMs. The RPMs may not be the cause for that. Let your dealer worry about that, don't try to adjust anything. Take your car back to them and tell them it is still stalling despite an update. Either have them fix it right, or get your money back.
