There are tons of threads on this, some on the first few pages. Search is down but scroll back and you'll find some.
Cliff notes:
- Mobil 1 is a great synthetic, some prefer Amsoil but it is more $$.
- It's best to wait 6-10k before switching to synthetic.

Just wondering,
why wait until 6-10K for the synthetic? Something to do with the seals?
P.S. Do synthetics use a special oil filter?

Mobil Tri-Syn was mieral based, but the SuperSyn is in the same category as the Amsoil now. There is no doubt that Amsoil is the best. It's been proven time and again with oil analysis and wear tests. That being said, most people don't drive their cars 250,000 miles and Mobil 1 SuperSyn can most certainly get you to that level. I personally use Amsoil just because I'm a freak and want the best, but I also change it in my Max every 5k. I change it in my Durango 2 times a year.
It's all in the brew...
If I understand it correctly, Mobil 1 is made by "refining or ameliorating" oil(as a chemist i can get into the semantics of it but...they can actually control the type and length of hydrocabons they want to make)... ie. Mobil 1 petrochemical-folk actually know whats in the quart, better hydrocarbons that are "made" or "synthesize," which can withstand high temps and impede (not prevents)oxidation for a longer period of time, when compared to conventional motor oil, which is a smore-gaas-borg of stuff.
Amsoil is porbably synthesized through a similar process OR these magical petrochemical-folk actually "build up" their hydrocarbons.
Bottom line:
A)stick with conventional and OEM filters @~3000 miles
B)stick with synthetics (Mobil or Castrol) and OEM filters @~4000 miles
C) B good quality filter
IMO unless you track your car from sun up to sun down OR drive home on the NJ turnpike and your Max is S/C, you really shouldn't spend to mcuh $$$ on oil...Mobil 1 is good enough...We're not driving twin turbo GT-R Skylines fellas or Murcielagos...Our cars are fast, not rockets...
