I have that a$$ smell when I first run on the AC. I think it's b/c I need to change my in cabin air filter. Does anyone know how I can do this. I need a good walkthrough.
Thanks

Ok wow, NizanDrivn, SHUT THE F**K UP! I've read two threads now with you posting the same bullsh!t. If you are so worried about the databases filling up with nonsense, don't post this type of ****, and wait for someone else to offer HELP. You aren't a moderator so quit acting like a bish.

Is this standard on the Maximas or was it an option?

Re: Replacing In Cabin Filter

That happens whenever you leave your AC on recirculation mode. A bit of mold builds up and when you run the air, it smells bad for a good few minutes. I've noticed this in the Maxima and the Quest minivan.

The easiest way to keep that smell away as much as you can is to not leave your AC on recirculation mode. Just run the air straight through all the time. Only use the recirculation mode to quickly cool the cabin down or to keep smelly outside air out temporarily and then switch back to the normal mode.

The in-cabin microfilter is really there to keep out allergens and to help freshen up the air that shoots around through your air ducts. It won't really keep the light mold smell from happening if you keep your AC on recirc.

If you want the installation instructions from the 2002 Maxima Electronic Service Manual, here it is...

---

Ventilation Air Filter:

Air inside passenger compartment is kept clean at either recirculation or fresh mode by installing ventilation air filter into cooling unit.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE:
1. Remove glove box.
2. Remove instrument lower panel from instrument panel.
3. Remove filter cover fixed clip.
4. Slide the filter cover to the upper side and then remove it.
5. Take out the ventilation air filter from cooling unit.
6. Replace with new one and reinstall on cooling unit.

---

These instructions should be the same for '00 to '03 Maximas. NOTE: The 2002 Maxima Electronic Service Manual recommends a replacement interval of 15,000 miles. And, no, this is not standard equipment (maybe it is with the GLE, I'm not sure) and costs around $45.00.

Peace.

Thanks for the help guys. When I opened the filter cover I noticed I did'nt have a filter. So all I had was a bunch of soggy leaves in there. I clean it out as much as I could but couldn't get it all. The space was to small to get my hands in there. Looks like I'll have to buy a filter. Maybe I'll even put some kind of air freshners in there.

Since it wasn't standard option, can anyone buy a filter and place install one(is the mounting place there for one)? Or is not possible at all without having bought that option?

There is a spot for the filter, so even if your Maxima didn't come with it, you should be able to just stick one in.
