Power loss at 4k?

Since the search function seems to be disabled for my account, here's the question:

68k miles on a 2000 SE stick, and the engine now "lays down" on acceleration between 4-4.5k rpms. It's strange because the engine will accelerate strongly for a given gas-pedal pressure, then drop off at those rpms (without changing pedal pressure). Then the motor comes back and accelerates hard to redline.

Anyone else experience this? Thanks.

Might be issues with a/f ratio or fuel pressure sputtering. Might be clogged injectors. Also since you at it, might as well do a compression test to see if there is any issues there.
