Dent in CV boot

So I was changing my oil yesterday (finally hit 3000 miles on the new Max) - don't worry, I put in Mobil-1 synthetic..

Well, we had the plastic covering pulled back to work on the oil filter and when we were done, we forgot to push the plastic back in place. We lowered the car and I heard this noise. I raised it back up and apparently the plastic smooshed the CV boot.

The CV boot is just a rubber boot about 6" long and it has ripples in it, to make it flexible, like a dryer hose would be, except much taller ripples.

Well, one of the ripples now has a dent in it. I paniced at first, but after careful inspect there are no tears. In fact, I could "roll" the dent around the boot (to other parts of the same ripple) and confirm there were no tears on the ripple.

I'm still worried, though, since this dent is now possible causing undue strain on the rubber boot. I don't think it's enough, but nonetheless I wanted to post and see what you guys thought about this. I cannot get the dent out, since the CV boot is apparently sealed air tight and thus I cannot pull the dent out. I don't know where the air that was displaced went - my guess is the CV boot is larger in some spot now - or the air was forcefully leaked out the end seal..

Any ideas what to do?

Kevin

Buzz it up to 135-140 MPH, centrifugal force should pop it right back out.

Or you can do it by hand.

I think most agree that synthetic is superior oil. The question is do you need it? If you change your oil regularly and use quality filters there isn't much if any advantage.

BTW, I always use Mobil 1. I just like doing nice things for my car. It's like giving your gf a diamond vs. a CZ. She won't know but you will.

Isn't Amsoil kind of like Amway for your car?

Same here, good point on the diamond thing What the hell is amway? Amsoil is in some ways better then Mobil-1. It only requires you to change the oil once a yr and the filter once every 6months.

OK, BACK ON TOPIC

How do you suggest I do it "by hand"? It is really hard to pinch the dent and pull it out. Imagine denting the curvy part of a straw - how could you pull that out?

I'll try the 140mph trick and see if that works. If nothing else, I will go 140mph finally.

What's top speed on these things, anyway?

Auto I belive you'll hit the wall 130-135 the 6spd will however go well over 150. Dude its not that hard, I work on cars so I know what your talkin about. I dont know how big the dent is but its rubber, you can work it out. Pinch the rib with one hand above the dent and the same blow the dent with the other hand and squeeze/pull whatever just work it out. If you wanna go 140 then go 4 it, if your really fed up get a new CV booth its like $125 with install.

I would say if you are so worried about, replace it. It is really nothing to be worried about. It is meant to last a fairly long time, and being that the car is so new, the rubber will be nice and soft for many years.

ok, you guys have given me some confidence..

I'll try the 150mph trick then (I have a 6-speed) and if that doesn't do it, I'll try to work it out - perhaps I just need a better angle (than on my back with hardly both arms up in there) -- I could jack it up higher and see if that makes it easier..

I would personally just jack it up, goin 150 is fun but im in no mood to even think of goin that fast. I just got a criminal speeding ticket for taking a right shoulder goin 77 in a 40. Damn Teins hold too well, I could have gone another 20+mph
