sunroof problem

What's up, guys?

Have any of you experience a problem with your sunroof motor being very slow - so slow that the sunroof actually doesn't even want to open? I mean I can understand it might act like that because it hasn't been used due to the rainforest conditons on the East Coast but this is worrysome.

Basically, on Friday, the sunroof opened half-way and then died. Since then it has done this periodically. Is there a TSB for this or has someone else experienced an issue like this?

I had some problems with my sunroof acting wierd too. It would open a little, then I would have to hit the switch again to get it to move some more etc. Anyway, I pulled the sunroof relay and waited 5 min or so and put it back. This seemed to reset something and it works great now! Might help you with your problem!

The dealer had to replace my sunroof motor becuase the roof wasn't opening all the way and finally the motor blew. Apparently someting was binding up the track and causing the sunroof motor to overload.

This sounds like exactly the issue that I'm having. What a pain! This is the first issue I've had with the car that requires taking it to the dealer.

I wonder how long it takes for them to replace the motor if they need to....

Sunroof Motor

I've had my sunroof motor replaced twice now. Seems like mine has a life expectancy of about 25,000 miles. It takes the dealer less than an hour to change the motor.
Both times mine crapped out - the switch basically didn't work right any more. If I hit the express, it would travel about three inches at a time then stop. Sometimes it just wouldn't budge at all.
Two different dealers just replaced the motor and didn't give any explanations as to why it kept breaking. At least the second time, Nissan NA was kind enough to pay for the motor - even though it was out of warranty. Damn decent of em.

Jazzy8 That is exactly what mine was doing. All you have to do is pull the relay for about 1-2 min and then put it back. It seems that if you have the sunroof in the tilt position and hit the express button, it screws everything up. You actually have to use the tilt switch to close the sunroof, then use the express switch. I wish Nissan would get some better educated EEs on their design staff, because thats really stupid.

Relay

GLE2000 - do you mean the relay under the hood - bolted to one of the fenders? Thanks a bunch!

Yeah I got this nasty problem too. Only moves about 3 inches or so, and it seems that both switches perform identically (i.e. I can open it up all the way using either switch, although I have to keep pressing the switch to move it 3 inches at a time...)
I took the switch apart, or at least the left component (with the normal & automatic switch positions), and nothing looks unusual (it's actually a fairly simple assembly; if you've ever taken apart a joypad or NES pad or whatever it'd look very similar, just be careful since the parts inside are very small/easy to lose), but then I did not check the right side (tilt switch) for any shorts/etc.
I'm assuming at this point that the motor's CPU is bad. The motor itself works fine (no unusual noise/etc), it just won't do its automatic thing.
Also, how do you remove the motor? Do you have to somehow remove the ceiling upholstery?
I'm planning on taking it to the dealer for service (under warranty), but I'd like to take apart the sunroof motor and see if there's something obvious inside that I could fix myself (preferably a PERMANENT fix if possible...), rather than have them replace the motor and then have THAT one go up eventually...

I'm not sure if I'm covered under Nissan's 3yr/36Kmi warranty, but I have an extended warranty plan with the dealership I bought it from which lasts to 2008/100Kmi (bumper-to-bumper, covers everything)

Just pull the relay. It resets the memory for the auto slide function and everything.

My sunroof was acting weird too, except mine would open by itself.
There was a TSB to fix this problem.... got it done today. It involved replacing the sunroof switch assembly. We'll see if it works. I've seen a lot of complaints of the sunroofs in the Maximas. You would think that something you paid so much for wouldn't have the problems that most "cheap" cars have.

Hey there..

Not related to the opening/closing function of the Sun Roof that you guys are talking about....But have Any of you ever after a car wash notice when you open the roof, the insides are wet around the edges on the front and sides of the sunroof track.?
Wondering if it's the seal on the sunroof and/or if it's normal after a wash? (I never opened my sunroof before on my previous cars, so i can't compare them)

Thanks,
max0002

max0002,
I have never paid attention. I will check when I wash my car this weekend. I wouldn't think it should be wet because that would mean that moisture could be getting inside the car. Hmmmm, i'm curious now.

My 2k2 owner's manual has a procedure for resetting the switch/memory when you're having problems. Look it up and give it a shot.

QT,
let me know what you find out as my thoughts exactly, it shouldn't be wet in there.. Another area where you can check is the door jams (sp?)..after your wash, open your front passenger & driver door and check on the latch area on the door, mine is always wet from the wash (ie. sprinkles of water all over that area). EVERYtime I wash, im' wondering if it's the rubber surrounding the door not sealing properly? I would hate it to rust from the inside out. Plan to keep the max for as long as I can..

cheers,
max0002
