I'm a newbie to my car, with 550 miles so far. I've been trying to be very careful during the breakin period to not exceed 4000 rpm or so. I was stuck behind 2 cars going the same speed next to each other (don't you just hate that), at like 20 miles below the limit. I finally saw a gap and went for it. I gave it a little more gas, especially when the guy in front started breaking for no reason, and all of a sudden, vroooooooooom at probably at least 5500 rpm and engaged what felt like afterburners. It was fun, but did I hurt anything? They say not to exceed 4000 during break-in... is that a hard and fast rule, that for a few seconds you can go higher?
And oh, BTW, are other people getting crappy MPG like about 16 or so in city driving, short trips? Does it get better the more miles go on the car, after breaking in?

Yes, I think that you do get 'crappy MPG' for a while... However, I do believe that it gets better. My mileage has gotten better (got my 2k1 SE on 12/8) over time, could be either my imagination or I have gotten used to when to shift.
The mileage will definitely get better, but never the advertised 28mpg if you're taking "short" trips in the city... From what I've heard on these boards, you won't see that kind of mileage until you have at least 15 minutes of good warm-up... (until then, your car runs a special warm-up "program" which runs a very "rich" mixture through the engine, giving you horrible mileage...)
Otherwise, maximum mileage would occur under normal highway conditions, going a steady 50-55mph... (preferably with cruise engaged)

You guys are too easy! I went WOT on the first drive home about 20 times and dynoed the car at 300 miles. I then proceeded to make about 100 1/4 mile passes in the first 10,000 miles of the car's life. All is well......so far...Im now at 15k
I just hope that Nissan cant read how many times the car has hit the limiter

hehe...Actually, I believe that the ECU keeps certain stats such as maximum speed reached and revs in memory. Scary isn't it

I too couldn't keep from stomping on the gas! Especially, when I looked down and saw exactly 1000 miles on the odometer in less than 2-weeks. Damn!
