2000 Nissan Maxima
I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima GXE 5 Speed that started misfiring at or around 3000-3500 RPMs. I took it to my regular mechanic who changed the plugs and put in Bosch Platinums. However, it continued to misfire. I took it back and they put it on their machines but got no codes. They then found a TSB that listed the oxygen sensor as the issue (but at 1200-1800 RPMs which didn't quite fit) and told me I'd have to take it the dreaded dealer. Well, the dealer did their famous number on me -- they found no codes and so they first replaced the Bosch spark plugs with NGK ones. That didn't work. Then they said there was carbon build up in the injectors and they flushed those. That didn't work. Well I was up to $355 & I figured it was time to cut my losses. They recommended checking the fuel pressure(another $165), the air flow meter($455 + $165 labor), the throttle switch ($250), and O2 sensors ($137 each + labor). None of which they were sure of except that if they continued in this madness it would bankrupt me. Does anyone out there have a clue as to what this could be -- anyone who solves this mystery gets a $50 gift certificate to the restaurant of their choice and my humble thanks.

Wheelman,
Many thanks. I had tried that originally and had tried 93 octane over 2-3 tanks.

Supposedly the idle is set too low for that year (2000)...I have a 2000 se and I am taking it in on weds to get it checked out...If you had all them things checked out that could be another option...I bought the extended warranty, so i dont care, the car can sit there all day till its fixed...They are paying for it...
Good luck though, i hate it too b/c it seems like you are neutral bombing it...

A misfire on a VQ is 99% of the time the result of either a bad plug (which isn't in your case) or a bad coil. Locate the bad coil(s) and replace it/them and that should solve the problem.
I'm not sure this is the problem but there was a fuel cut TSB for 5 speeds? Did you ever have that done?
Sorry to hear all the problems man. Time to draw a line and say look you fools solve this. I think you should in your most professional manner start making calls to Nissan head office, itemizing all you have paid to solve this and still there's no resolution.
This way, if litigation is necessary you can recover your some of your cost from these idiots.
You're right, they will run your bank account into the ground

we dont have wires. no cap, no rotor button, its direct ignition. you could replace the coils but typically they throw a cel and tell you which of the coils is bad.

I just upgraded mine to 5ghz 802.11a
Re: 2000 Nissan Maxima
I had the exact same problem on my 2k Max at around 60k. It seems that the 2k's are notorious for having failed ignition coils. I too changed my spark plugs (all 6) at first before I knew this and had no change in the misfire. I read multiple posts on this forum and found if I "pull" the ECU codes from my local "autozone" or buy my own OBD 2 code reading device ($120, which I ultimately did), I found the code to reveal a bad #1 coil. I found which coil that was from my owners handbook and replaced the coil with a brand new one from Courtesy Nissan ($50). Don't let ANY repair shop quote you $300 dollars to fix a faulty coil like one tried to do with me. If you need instructions on replacing coils or plugs, feel free to email me. It is not difficult at all. I hope this is all that you needed. Good luck to all who have this problem.

Need Help
Hello, I have Nissan Maxima 2001 which has 56,000 miles.
I got check engine light ON and i took it to near dealer. They said DTC P0505 which is IACV-AAC VALVE --went with ECM. They replaced following parts 23781-2Y012 AND 2371-5Y006RE. After this they asked me to ride 100 miles, in order for readiness monitore to get reset. I drove the same and found the following not ready/reset.
1. Oxygen Sensor - NOT Ready
2. Catalyst - NOT Ready.
My dealer again asked me drive some more miles. I already drove 1500miles. Still it's not got READY/RESET. Because of this my state Inspection is getting FAIL. Now I am getting ticket from Cop. My dealer says he has no idea why it's not READY. He said need to call NISSAN help and find it out.
Can anyone help/throw some light on how to fix this..please.

I recall a how to on how to check each coill with an eletric tester. I'll see of I find it.
Update: I can't seem to find it. IIRC it used an ohms tester. I'm not saying the coils are the problem, but lets rule them out before throwing parts at a car.
