Mastercraft LSR tires == POS??
Mastercraft LSR tires == POS??
Hi!
I'm looking for tires for my 2000 se 5spd 17"ers(potenzcraps worn to slicks at 25k.)
I was considering goodyear rsa's and mich pilot sport, but my local big-o guy (who's never steared me wrong before) suggested a set of Mastercraft Avenger LSR's at a big price difference. They have all the making of a good tire, but I was hoping for some actual experience out there?
Any takers?

Treadwear ratings are dictated by manufacturers, not a universal coding system so those numbers should be looked at VERY cautiously.
Also, have you looked at the Pilot Sport A/S's??? Hmmmm...treadwear of 400!!! Boy they must SUCK in the rain and be hard as a rock!!! Uh, NO!!

With tires you get what you pay for ... Spend the money and get as much as you can !! cheap tires use harder rubber compounds, a fast car deserves softies, tread wear rating approx 200 - 220, but no harder than 300. If you are a little gentle on soft tires, you might get a good 25k - 30k miles of great Fun !! Or complain about being cheap on discounted tires ...

Oh, I must have touched a nerve - are you a Mastercraft Tire dealer or something?
I'm not running off at the mouth, a**hole. I wouldn't have made a comment if I didn't have a decent amount of experience with tires.
I HAVE owned the Pilot Sport A/S's, and they DO suck in the rain (I'm referring to traction here, not hydroplaning resistance, which is a completely different issue). They were actually quite good for the first 10,000 miles or so, but they hardened very quickly after that. I got rid of them at 30,000 miles. There was tons of tread left, but the tire was downright dangerous in the rain, and no better than the Potenzas in the dry.
Face it - every tire is a compromise - there's just no such thing as excellent traction AND excellent treadwear from the same tire, and anyone who tells you differently is either lying or ignorant.
Mastercraft is a tire line of Cooper Tire. I have a set of 17" SLE touring or our 2k and they rock. Installed then in November and have almost 13k miles on them. Very happy with the choice. I am guessing the Mastercraft is the same core tire with a diff tread. Personally I would go for the SLE but that is your call. I don't agree you always get what you pay for. Let me know if you have any more questions about the SLE. My pop has used Cooper tires on his cars for over 30 years. No problems for us which is much more than we can say for other brands of tires that we have owned.

I also have the Cooper Lifeliner SLE V-rated on my car. I a bought them at the end of February. I have put 10,000 miles on the car since and they are a definate improvement over the stock tires.

Well, unless you have over 1.2 million miles on them I find a survey which shows the overall concensus of a whole bunch of people disagreeing with you...

I am not a dealer, I just don't like generalizations like this to be put down as concrete fact. To me, that IS running off at the mouth. And happily I don't need to include personal commentaries like yours...
An opinion is one thing, present it as such and not as a statement of fact.

First of all, your suggestion that I'm running off at the mouth IS a personal commentary.
Second, you seemed to have missed the "IMO" in my post. That means, in case you didn't know, 'in my opinion'.
Last, my statement that all tires are a compromise IS fact. You can't have it all in one tire, period.

I think I will go that route. I would prefer the michilins but I would also like to keep that extra money and put into stereo upgrades.
Thanks to everyone for your input.
Just one other thing:
You may get what you pay for, but sometimes a namebrand is what you are really paying for. You know the cute little michilin man in the commercials, he needs to be funded.
