Trunk mounted bike racks that will fit 5th gen w/spoiler?

After installing a spoiler on my 2k GXE, I can't seem to find an inexpensive ($40 range) rack that will fit. I called several local sporting goods stores and was told the cheapest is like $100.

I've seen several around $60. Have you checked ebay or any bike magazines? They should have good prices. Just be carefull with the rack, put a towel over your spoiler or you'll chip it like I did to mine.

it is not that I am having a problem of finding a rack. There are so many of them, but what is the one that fits? Sellers would not disclose the fitment applications, so EBAY is not going to work. What is the make/model of your rack?

I personally don't own a rack, but go biking with my buddy who has one. He lives 5 hours away, but this weekend I'm going there so I'll find out then. Give me to probably until Monday and I'll know.

He just has a universal one, just like the one above. The structure V's and touches the licence plate and the trunk lid. Then there are two hooks with straps that hook onto the lip of your trunk by the back window and 2 more that connect under the bumper. I know he used it with my 2002 maxima and many other cars. Some have hooks that instead of connecting by the rear window you open your trunk and slip them inside so when you close the trunk it holds them securely without hurting the paint from having hooks directly touching the paint. It's no problem if you get one that does hook to your trunk, just put a rag or something between the metal hooks and you'll be fine. Hope this helps, but I dought he'll know much more about the rack concerning the model and what not. Get one similar to the one I described and it would work. I can take a picture of my friend's this weekend if you want.

Hollywood F2 model. Good basic rack, about 70 bucks. Holds 3 bikes. Will fit over spoiler. Ask a local bike shop, not a sporting goods store.

I remember getting one (Grabber or something) for about 70$ from ****s. It can hold up to three bikes and goes over spoiler. But I would NOT recommend it. Plastic straps break after a while, plus it's very very easy to scratch the paint of your car's trunk with bike pedals if you are not careful. I switched to roof rack. Holds four bikes or anything else.

You might check out the Saris Bones rack - that has a good reputation, and from what I remember it looks like the shape might fit over the spoiler. Otherwise check out:

www.performancebike.com

www.bikenashbar.com

Also, if you're only carrying one bike, mine fit:

Frame in trunk, wheels in car on floor (Litespeed)

Frame in trunk, with wheels on top (rain bike )

Saris Bones. Don't put a $40 rack on your Max (unless you pick up a good used one. AAMOF, you're looking for scratched if you put a rack on period.

Seriously consider a hidden hitch and a hitch mounted rack.

cmon guys I have a $100 bike and hell no I am not going to spend $200 on a hitch and a rack. There has got to be the cheaper way to do it..Dissassembling the bike is also not the way to go, carrying the tools around, its just too much of a pain.

Don't forget that you have a $25k car (or at least it used to be this way).
BTW, bike shops usually charge 2 arms and leg

And, MannyNJ2k2max, $100 for a THULE is a great deal.

I have a hidden hitch and rack. I wouldn't think of putting a trunk mounted rack on my Max. No matter what you do you're going to dent the trunk or, at the very least, scratch your paint. It's worth it to have a hitch. Then nothing at all touches your car.

Bike shops do not charge an arm and a leg. I own a bike shop. I do not charge an arm and a leg. One of our competitors will take your arm by force if you let them, but thats not the way I do business. Although a trunk rack might dent or scratch your trunk, so does a roof rack, at leat to your roof, or your trunk if it goes flying off the back. If you have a new maxima, go buy a decent bike.

Good trunk racks are designed to prevent the bikes from touching the car, so there should be no concern for scratching and denting. If I drive a Maxima (which btw is 3 yrs old) it does not mean I should buy a $2000 bike and $500 rack just because you said so. What are you doing on Maxima forum instead of MB forum?

Are you really giving grief to the people trying to help you by answering your question? Just duct tape your bike to the trunk then - that should work

Make sure whatever you do find is supported by the bumper and not the truck rear. I bent my rear wall really bad with 2 road bikes. Not to mention gouging the heck outta my bumper with the pedals.

Ok, let me get this straight, you drop tens of thousands of dollars on a car, then ***** about a lousy $200.00 for a rack. Remember, the rack is to protect the car, not the $100.00 bike.

The other alternative is just ride the lousy bike around the neighborhood and don't worry abotu the rack cost at all.

Thule racks start at $60 for the Freeway model. Thule is good stuff have it and sell it. Rack won't scratch your car usually its the bike.
