I'm kind of new hear.i currently have a 3rd gen with 64k miles on it.my fiance' and i are gonna have a baby. can't afford 2 car payments. gonna have to trade in our cars for 1. she has a 2k escort and owes 9k.i owe 6k. this dealership we went to is gonna give us 10k for hers and 7k for mine. we were looking at a 2k max gxe with 34k miles on it!! it was a rent-a-car.the dealer wants 21k for it. its only worth about 18k. is this worth it or should i look for a 2kmax with little miles on it and spend the extra cash??? thanks in advance.

check edmunds.com. You can get pricing for new or used. Also check out KBB.com. Dealers are gonna mark-up big time on their used cars so watch out.

And yes the SE does come with an auto.

period.... I don't know about you others.... but everytime I get a rental car... I beat the sh*t out of it.... rev it up and spin the tire and stuff like that... and what the dealer is asking for it WAYYYYYY too much... I got my GXE brand new with 10 miles on it(just came off the truck) for 19,000(excluding the tax)
check http://www.kbb.com, they have use car value in there

Don't get a rent-a-car and not at 21K for a GXE thats a year old! Thats crazy! Look around. And when working on prices, always act like you just like the car a "little", and not affraid to walk away.

Try http://www.autotrader.com and I would warn you that sometimes its cheaper to keep the cars you have especially w/ kids. By the way, I bought mine (2k)fully loaded in Nov. w/ x-tended warranty and 17k miles. $22.5k in Nj (It's mucho expensive here.)

Dealer is blowing smoke at you...

As others have stated, $21K is way too high. I don't know where you live, but for example, to give relative values of cars, I've seen _several_ 99 Ford Taurii for under $10K, including a wagon in the papers (actually most were under $8K, suspect high mileage, but there were others under $10k that had reasonable mileage). Makes me wonder how the Escort merits $10K trade-in unless he's jacking up the trade-in value to make you "feel good" but insists on robbery prices on the newer car.

FYI, usually you'd get more $$ selling the cars yourself.

Good luck

STAY AWAY FROM THAT DEALER

You can buy a Brand new Maxima GXE 5 speed from http://www.carsdirect.com for $ 20,008.00 add $ 1,322.00 for the auto transmition and they deliver it to your driveway.

I bought my 2000 Maxima SE From Carsdirect and payed $23,600.00 plus title and tax that was in Febuary 2000.

your deal

I'll echo several others...avoid the rental! AND shop around. I bought via autoweb. Paid $100 under invoice for my 2K1 SE AE 5spd. (hippodrome in Nashville, TN) Granted, it was still $27k, but you could shop a well-equipped GXE for around your price range, I would imagine. I would suggest you reconsider trading your two cars for one...sooner or later, you're going to want a second car. And with a NEW car payment, it will be difficult. Can you get a bank to loan you the money to pay both off and combine into a single consumer loan with both cars as collateral? If you've got good credit and they are worth more than what is owed collectively, then you might make it work. Check it out. And, if worse came to worse, you wouldn't be sitting without ANY way to go.

Just my cents worth.

I got my GXE for $24,300 (thats total with regestration and tax). I would recomend paying extra money (probably in the range of $2-3000) and getting a GLE. I was offered a fully loaded one one for $26,700 out the door but i decided to save money and went with the cheaper one, I now regret not getting the sunroof or the leather.

Good luck with your buy
