Painting Car?

Ok I'm about to paint my car... I plan to go to Macco? but I am going to bring my own paint and I just wanted to know where would I go to get a gallon or so of "Dark Lustre Grey" aka "Charcoal Grey" Code "KV3"? I don't want to order off the internet......

Also is their anything else I need to know? Can I use black as a base coat or is this paint its own basecoat since its a stock color? Or is that unnecessary?

uhm.. you have a 5th gen and want to go to Macco?.. All I need to say is NOOO!!!. A good paint job is usually 3 to 6 thousand dollars, Macco charges what? $200... You get what you pay for, and painting your car is no exception.

I have to agree, my little brother took his boat (89 Towncar) to Macco and they proved once and for all; you get what you pay for. That car started peeling almost immediately after the warranty ran out on the paint job (not sure whether 6 months or 1 year.)

Maaco?

They don't even paint the inside of the doors or anything like that. They just spray the outside and it's done.

A couple things here...

1. You want Nissan paint (KV3) but don't know where to get it? Uh, dealership.

2. Maaco?!?!?!? (Enough said here!)

3. Why not just get a bunch of spray paint from Autozone and do it yourself...I doubt it could be much worse than the above plan.

Wrong, dealerships don't deal with selling paint, maybe touch-up, but he is looking for gallons and he definitly won't get it from the dealer.

Try going to a local body shop and asking where they get their paint. One thing I can agree on is not taking it Maaco, you'll regret it.

He will if he orders it from them, especially those dealerships with in-house body shops.

Gotta agree with the Maaco thing. Don't do it.

btw, I hope the people discouraging the Maaco paint job, aren't the same people riding around on $70 Nittos.

Thanks for the replies even the bitter ones (jjs)

Ive heard the Maaco thing over and over but my understanding from other posts is that if you bring your own paint an if your good enough to do your own body work then its not too much fu*king up Maaco can do.

My plan is to bring with me (wherever I go) my own primer (HOK Primer), my own paint Nissan 2003(KV3), along with House of Kolor UC-35 Clear?

I want the color without the freak ups Nissan provided in the paint or in preparation of painting. An no I DON'T have a 5th gen....

Maybe if you bring your own paint you will have better results. I'm interested in repainting my car, but I've heard only negative things about them, i guess it could be the $hitty paint. Good luck, and let me know how much you paid and what you think of the results.

I've taken a project car to Maaco for the heck of it and found this to be true: their paint isn't the problem, their preparation is. In other words, minimal preparation. I brought my car on a rollback already prepped, taped, sanded, cleaned, recleaned, sanded, recleaned, etc. for them to just shoot the paint. Oh yeah, if you transport it and don't tape the wheels, make sure you have old wheels to use. They haven't really been good about overspray. Have fun!

house of color is finicky, i wouldnt leave that up to maaco to shoot. i wouldnt mix paint systems either( hok with ppg, ppq with dupont, spies with u-tech, etc.) go to a local paint place (albert kemperle is the largest in ny) ask them for their opinion, and roll with that. keep in mind maaco carges you extra for the prep and mask off work, but i dont think they nescesarally allow you to do it in their facility either, probably the same with the paint, theyll give you bull about not gauranteeing the work. they will need the reducers and hardeners(if applicable) that goes with the paint system you choose. hok paints rock, but whats the point of going with their primer and clear if youre not going to shoot their paint, plus the added $$$$. find out what your budget is and go from there. youre going to spend a good 3-600 in materials anyway.

btw i have had friends with maaco jobs that came out acceptable, just make sure it looks 100% when you take it there

I had one of these el cheapo baked on paint jobs done on a car in college. Came back w/ tiny little bubbles all over the car. They said they would smooth out over time... guess I didn't wait long enough b/c I sold the car 6 months later and they were still there.
