decent price for 2000 maxima se???

i just got back from the dealership, and 2 interesting things happened.
On the way there, I had my girlfriend call the dealer and ask how much they were selling the same exact car I was headed over to check out for. I did this to see if they would quote her a different price over the phone then they quoted me, and sure enough, a different salesman picked up, and quoted... 17,990!!! for the 2000 gle with 57k miles on it.
by the time she called me back I was already at the dealer, and I was test driving it, so she left me a voicemail. As for the testdrive, the ride was fine, tires had decent tread on it, the leather seats were in decent condition, though you could see some wear in the passenger seat.
I advised the dealer I would be going to my bank tommorow to see about financing, and I had asked for a final price to go to them with, but he could not give one to me. He kept saying hold on, going into his "bosses" office with a folder for roughly 3 - 5 minute intervals, then coming back asking how much could I put down on top of the trade in, etc.
Sounds kinda shady if you ask me. Any one else deal with situations similar to this when they bought there car?

some dealers start off real high and are real high pressure. Others start off reasonable and will drop only 1000 tops. Most dealers rip off women. Price does seem too high. The run around talk to bosses, argueing etc is normal at some dealerships. I wouldn't let a bad salesman stop a deal, only a bad car and bad price.

hmmm, the car is in decent cond, not outstanding? given that it's an 00 some wear is reasonable, but it sounds like the people actually used their gle when they had it.
pass seat some extra wear...maybe the wife was a big one. does the car lean to the right? for the price they seem to want for this, it should be in extraordinary cond.
if you decide to deal with this idiot of a salesman, then apply your own tactics. when he leaves for more than 2 min, then get up and walk to your car, look at other cars, take a crap, etc. he's playing the 'im in charge game.'
good going in your reply to his 'down payment' question. he's trying to make you forget about the actual sales price. did you run carfax? how about a good mechanic. if you arent experienced with crashed cars, he could help in determining if there is some paint work. carfax doesnt know everything about its history.
chris, yes american and korean get hit harder than nissan with depreciation. BUT nissan is NOT a piece of junk like them, in general. IT comapres with honda and toyota in regards to automobiles. VW? ever price one.. they hold value very well. i think we've beat our points to death, let us see that all of us have valid arguments b/c im done. thanks for your input.

I bought my 2000 SE with cloth, 16's and no sunroof with 37k for 13,500. The dealer started at 15,900. That is in Atlanta though where the market is full of 2000 - 2003 in all trim levels. The average price for a 2000 is $16,178.
