decent price for 2000 maxima se???

hey everyone,
I am new to the board and wanted to get some of the vets here opinions on a price for the max i want. Im a college grad student, so I do not yet have the money to afford the 2k3 or 2k4 max, but the max i want(2000 SE model) i have found at a few dealerships here in VA for what I thought was a decent price.

One in particular had a white 2000 se, auto tranny, 46k miles, for 14,500. I have 3000 to use as a down payment, and I would finance the rest. Is that a decent price?

Yes, it is a decent price. Especially if it has leather - meridian - moon roof - 17" rims - Bose - and other options.

you should be able to get it for $12K. i would'nt give a penny more. subtract $ if there is no moonrf, heated, 17's, etc. this car is about 4 yrs old so depreciation has taken a toll on the value of the vehicle.

1. it has the 3.0L
2. the 04 is on the road
3. waranty is expired
4. 03 loaded gle was $24K last month

use these as bargaining chips. also run carfax!!! and have a dealership check it out! good luck

and do not believe anything people say when they are trying to sell you on a car.

i just bought my 2000 loaded (leather/meridian)SE 5spd 5 months ago for $16.5k. I feel
ripped off now. I just checked the value on kbb, and it's worth just under $16k! I hate that the '04 came out! i wish i hadn't needed to buy a new car at that time. i could've gotten an '02 for $2-3k more, if i'd only known the value was going to drop almost $3k in 5 months!!

thanks for the info maxappeal. im going to check the car out monday afternoon. I talked to the sales guy again today, he said it is loaded with moonroof, heated seats, but didnt say about the 17 inch wheels or not.
Im gonna stick to my guns and try to get it for the 12K range you are speaking of. My uncle who works as a finance manager at a Honda dealership in NJ said the same thing to me. He said that especially because the 04 is out on the road now, they should practically give that one away.

im pretty certain that the car has 17's b/c it has heated, lthr, etc.

Keep your uncle updated on this deal. He will be a great help cause he knows the car biz and knows what types of deceitful practices that most dealers use. he should run the carfax for you asap.

remember, last month you could buy a brand new 03 loaded (no Nav) for $24K!

so 12K for the 00 is more than a fair price for the dealer.

keep us posted & good luck

I just Bought mine in February 2000 SE Pearl White, Leather Package, Sport Package, with all the options(Bose, Heated Seats, 17's, etc.). I paid $16K, with a 100K 7yr Full Warranty. It Had 34k, but the price you got for a GLE is good. Alot of 2000 had a transferable 100k Warranty, so I would look into that with the dealer. There are a lot of good deals with financing out there, check Chase they should have 5% or lower.

I just got mine last week, 2000 SE, Leather, Sunroof, 17" with the remainder of the 6 year (72 months) 100K warranty on the drive train only. That is what you get buying a "Certified" Nissan from a dealer. I also added on a supplemental policy that gives me Bumper To Bumper for the same period of time. That cost me $695 which I think was a great deal.

Has anyone else purchased the extra policy that covers just about everything. How much did it cost you? I've heard of these policies costing as much as $2500.

I'm not sure, I had bought mine off the original owner, and the only fee i had to pay was a $35 processing fee.

Is the place a used car only dealership, or is it an actual dealership?

As for price and everything, 14,500 does not seem bad. Having looked around that appears what they're going for. I've seen higher on 2000s a lot more in the 15-17 range for GLEs and loaded SEs. It all depends on where you live I guess. Also, maybe I'm old fashon, but I think value is very much based on condition.
I got a quote on an 02 SE with no options for $15K, great price, but Beater condition, nics scratches scrapes and worn interior

As for those telling you that 12K is the magic number... I think it really is a matter of where you live, but you can't get a stripped GXE by me for less than $13 unless the car has 60-100K miles.

If people are getting Loaded GLEs and SEs for $12k with 40k miles, I'd ask for my deposit back on my 02. And if things are so cheap everywhere else, I really need to move b/c dealers around here seem to be charging much higher prices

GLEs came with either 5 spoke 16"s or the GXE style 16"s on 2000 models. None of them came with 17"s until 2002.

Get real. As much as your "bargaining tactics" might make sense to you, it doesn't change the fact that the car has a market value, which is more towards the $14-15K range PRIVATE PARTY, let alone from a dealership.

If anyone on this board has gotten a LOADED (leather), sub 50K mi, 2000 model for anywhere near $12K at a place other than the auctions, I would be shocked.

I noticed that Kelley Blue Book lists the 2000SE with Leather for around $16.8k and yet NADA lists the same car for $19k. I thought that was a big disrepancy. Any one have an explanation for that. I paid $14,500 for my 2000 SE plus my trade in, an 89 Maxima in fair condition (KBB valued at $950). They also included a set of snow tires in the deal. I think I did pretty good. The subaru dealer down the street was asking $19k for basically the same car. I bought from a Nissan dealer. He started at $16,800 and that's where we ended up.

sweet lthr install in your 2k2!

15k? dude, you wish. your car has everything and you're asking 14,300 (and im sure its just about cherry!). how long have you tried to sell it? you are updsidedown on your loan. worst thing you can do is sell the car after 3 years. so keep rolling your eyes.

you bring up value... i'm not sure you completly understand the term value. your market value price should make your car a great deal, according to you. this means it will be gone in the first couple weeks. how long has it been? im not going to go into the entire value terminology cause it goes deeper than you think.

for 15K, you can get a 2000 I30 w/50M!

My car is basically sold for $14,400, pending loan approval this week, so don't go there. I have had 5+ calls a week on it, but people are hesitant to buy a 5 speed. Curtl (sp) just sold his auto for the same price private party. Go to a dealership and expect to pay $1500 more (like Ekirstein did). Also, I didn't buy the car new, so I am not upside down at all. Do a simple search on AutoTrader.com and see what the average asking price is for them.

Again, find me ONE org member who got their loaded car for $12K and then you may have a point. I got offered $12K in TRADE for my car at a local dealership 4 months ago.

the dealership i would buy from have 2 white 2000 maximas. one is a 2000 se , 46k miles, auto, no sunroof, no leather, and they have that listed for 14,500. the gle loaded with approx 58k miles has leather, sunroof, bose etc, is roughly 16k. the other thing i wanted to ask you guys is if I should trade my current car in that i own free and clear to use as a downpayment. Its a 97 toyota corolla, approx. 115k miles, and they are quoting me 2500 for trade in towards the max.
by the way, this is an acura dealership, but they have a nissan branch of it as well. www.hallauto.com is the dealer.

I paid 15700 a couple months back on ebay for my 2000. It's a loaded SE with 30000 miles. I felt like it was a fair price. The dealers around here only have stripped SE's (rental probably). Ebay was a good option for finding what I wanted. Check out auction histories there for market values.

Well I still am trying to sell mine, 5 speed, 35k miles, leather, Bose, Moonroof, 17"wheels, Tokiko Shocks, Maxspeed springs, Powertech muffler, K&N and all I wanted was 17, 16, 15,.... and all I got was one call!!

Then I got Andy luck, my shelving unit in my garage fell on the car and damaged the hood, fender, driver side mirror, grill, and bumper. Total estimate $2600 to fix. Now it is going to be in the shop getting repaired!!!

Andy, Congrats on finally selling the car. It's awesome that you got 5 calls a week, I only got a total of 2 in 3 months!!

I reiterate 14-16K for a 2000 maxima seems to be the market price. Not sure what "market" everyone is trading in but 12k is very unreasonable to expect for any kind of loaded 5th gen maxima with <50K miles.
1. buying from a dealer is more expensive than from an individual. It costs teh dealers money to operate and to give a warranty of any length, and that cost is passed on.

2. The only prices that I see online or on the internet from dealers anywhere near me that are in the ballpark of the 12K range.... are from dealers I would not do business with. two nissan diallers in my area in particular. Its great to find an advertised price for a car in teh paper that seems great, drive an hour, get there and ask to see the car. they spend 10 minutes to find it. It has a bashed in fender and bumper. That may sound extreme, but It's happened to me.

There also seem to be some more middle of the road dealers wher ethe cars aren't "really" damaged, but are scuffed up outside and fithly inside.

If thats your bargin, congrats, the price may be fair, but you get what you pay for.

2000 I30s for $15K... wake up you must be dreaming think more like 17 to 18

I used Cars.com when shopping for mine. They had a lot of diffrent Maxima's listed in my region and i would suggest this site to anyone looking for a car. It gives you a good idea of the diffrence in price from a private owner and a dealer.

ive checked out both autotrader and cars.com, and the prices in my region have varied. private owners selling saves you roughly 1500 here.

ebay is not a valid form of car pricing. Cars are sold below market on ebay and a lot of them out there are subpar condition. I've looked at a few.

As we can see from people posting here, and even looking through ads, 00s are selling in and around the 14-16.5 ballpark. if you think otherwise, talk to the people who paid the money.

btw I have a duel major in finance and accounting. And through both of those I've learned professional skepticism, you investigate and draw conclusions, things aren't always what they seem, and most cheaply priced cars are too good to be true.

Also pointing to forum members who may have had a hard time selling their car.......

They seem to be people who have modified their car. changed the shocks, springs, intake, exhaust. I don't know about other people, but I would not touch any of those cars for any kind of money. No offense to people here, but cars that are modified have much different personalities than those that are stock. Most people prefer stock, which is why stock is stock. Those that have been modified are not as pleasing to most and VERY likely have been driven harder (if you're not driving hard, why do you care about upgrading handling and power on an already sporty fast car)

Modified cars become much more of a specialty and to get good money for them you need to find someone who appreciates the mods like you do, or else they just detract from the car. This takes more time.

you make a couple valid points, but my position is that the 00 is not worth 15-17K! and from experience, ebays cars are in much cleaner condition than regular car lots', in general.

great, you claim expertise in accounting and finance you should understand depreciation. not to mention the other factors that knock the 00-01's price lower than maybe you'd like to see.

I would have to agree, I paid 16K but I also had extras, such as the warranty. I am also a finance economics major, and depreciation does play a major role. Today with 44k on my car its bluebook is around 15k.

Not to be repetitive, but the state you are in does have an impact on the value of the car, which is why kbb.com asks for your zip code. My experience is in lower NY, which is where I am basing my price perspective on.

Anyone like stock Maxima over modded one???

if you have ridden 95-03 maximas on stock suspension, I feel sorry for you. The great Pirelli said "Power is nothing without control"

enthusiasts who put intake and exhausts also do oil change, oil filter, tranny fluid, bushing change, etc etc maintenaince stuff religiously, so the increased HP doesn't damage the engine.

Remember, it's not how you "beat" your car, it's how you take care of your car. Not doing oil/tranny change hurts engine more than putting it to redline often or spraying 100 shot nitrous at track.

And for one, I'm looking to pick up a heavily modded 2k2+ within 4 years. I wouldn't touch a stock car next time.

I'm sorry to add to the whoring of this thread, but my answer is, wait couple 2 more years (i.e. 2005), and you'll be able to pick up 2000 SE for, say, $8000.

I drive a 95, and it's only worth $4300, and I have leather, 92K mi, etc etc. Maxima is a depreciation disaster, but that is good news, b/c we can pick up used ones at the right price.

Gee, do ya notice a difference in the asking price? Granted, he has lower mileage, but mine is still $1500 lower.

Again, please show me ANYONE who has gotten a loaded 2K with less than 50K miles for $12K. That will make your argument significantly more realistic. A simple autotrader search will show that it isn't going to happen.

4/17/03, but nice try. It has been two months.

Not that I feel I have to prove anything here, but I did get that amount on a consistent basis up until I put "firm" in the ad. Then the calls/e-mails tapered off to 2-3 per week. Most of the inquiries have been via e-mail, so you can never tell how serious those people are.

I was being facetious.

What on God's Green Earth are you talking about??

Please elaborate, oh wise one.

okay, okay, okay... my bad, i was alittle hostile also and i did not get your sarcasm, still dont. lets let this fire die.

im referring to your post in feb when you were looking to sell your car for 16obo, remember?
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ht=2000+maxima
search feature here is pretty good. whatever, im letting go of this too.(nice try?)

when you trade, they play a ton of games with the #'s. and you always loose. they could tell you they are giving you 15 for the car, that in itself does not mean anything. another member was convinced that he was getting 13 for a 99 gle! but he had to buy an 01 ae for 22 to get that for his trade!!!

What on God's Green Earth are you talking about?? <--- made me laugh
Please elaborate, oh wise one.<--- so did this one

maybe i was presumptuous about your trade value cause of the games dealers play. you may have a good deal, but i highly doubt it.

see the other posts?/ a car is depreciating asset, maxima resale is weak, the 02 refresh was major (exterior) and the 3.5, new 04 model on the road, new 03 gle loaded were 24K w/1.9 60 mo, etc.

just dont take this as a personal attack on your max. i know my 02 is not worth as much in reality as my heart knows it is.

lol.....I think I have gotten one e-mail lead total from Maxima.org. I was more or less just throwing it out there. I really didn't start selling it until I bought my 2K2.

Ah, I didn't see where you were going with that one. I thought you were saying I was an idiot for not taking the $12K. Yes, I know the games, four squares, etc. The car I was looking at was pretty close to invoice, but I didn't want to buy new and I didn't want burgundy.

Personally, I think that those who bought new 02-03s got hit the hardest on depreciation, which is in part due to the fact that Budget flooded the used market with Maxima ex-rentals.

I sold my 2k SEwith every option. white, auto, heated leather, moonroof for $14,300 and it had over 64k on it. NADA is what most use and it had the car at $15,500 Trade in.

MaxAppeal, not to make you look wrong but there is no way in God's green earth he is gonna get that car for 12k, My local dealers are selling the same car for 17k and 2k2s are going for 19k in the area. Andy's 2k is well worth over 14k.

Depreciation is a factor on any car. around here dealers don't believe they've depreciated much past 15-16. Keep in mind this is almost 15K off new in 3 years. Maxima owners take a hit, but american, korean, and VW owners all take worse hits. Its part of owning a car. Honda and toyota are better on depreciation, but I didn't want an appliance. Buying new is always the most costly way to go

Responding back to the modified vs unmodified, there are trade offs in each and there are good examples of modified cars and bad examples. I was merely pointing out that most people, and I mean people in general, not people on this board are looking for a stock car, me for example.

Therefore, market is smaller and smaller market means harder to sell. Same with the manual tranny. I read somewhere 6% of maximas were sold with manual transmissions. with that in mind, only 6 % of those buying used are looking for a manual transmission.
selling my car with a manual has been a bear.

hey guys,
i just got off the phone with the dealership. im headed over there to test drive the car now. As for price of the vehicle, the salesman said they had it listed at 16,490. i let him know that i wasnt trying to pay anywhere near that price, as i knew he was going to start high on that car. so we go back and forth, and then he asks me how much of a down payment am i going to put down. I tell them that has nothing to do with the price of the car, yet to him that seemed to determine what he told me they would sell the car for. from what he told me, its the gle model, with those awful stock rims/hubcaps that come with it, and it doesnt have a spoiler.

I know I would get rims and a spoiler after i bought it, but the price will have to be right for me to get it.
I will post later the results of the test drive.
