Bumper chips and scratches can be treated... 3M Adhesive Traction Tape.

This solution has been in place for 14 months, and while it leaves a bit to be desired.... it does make me feel better when I come out in the morning and see an offender's bumper paint filling my abrasive butt. The only problem is that a few of the car wash dudes have complained about bloody knuckles, and I have to use a lint remover to get the towel lint off.

mj - i also think of it as "aesthetically challenged". no offence taken.
i simply preferred this to installing a tow hitch or paying out twice a year to refinish the pitted bumper.

I NEVER take a car to the city that I care about and park it. If I'm in a pinch and have to drive I'll use a garage.

I lived in boston (allston) for a few years, where there was nothing but parallel parking. I had a grand cherokee back then so it was too much of a problem. Every car that i looked at had nice dings, scratches, holes from license plate screws. you got to do what you got to do.

don't really know about removal... it's fine so far (more than a year). I've removed the stuff from my condo's front steps (painted steel plate) with a hair dryer. It came up easily, but some adhesive stayed... didn't care 'cause I was replacing it. I figure that if it gets too ratty, I'll take it to the body shop and start the cycle of heartbreak all over again.

Considering all the damaged dark beemer and saab bumbers I see every day, I'm surprised that more folk don't do something like this... despite it's obvious ugliness for the "purist" set.

I saw someone else do something that actually looks fairly effective but I would be feel funny putting it on.

The person used a thick floor runner and let it hang down over the rear bumper. It was held in place by straps, closed in trunk. They turned the little pitted feet outward towards the car behind. I lifted the plastic to check and the bumper was clean.!!! (NYC)

I would feel funny putting it on every time I park.
