One 5 minute trip, two bent rims... :(

So I'm driving down a road after I dropped my brother off at baseball practice, being a good brother, when I come upon some road work. I'm driving 25 in the 30, when I see a lil trench in the ground, so I slow down a lil, thinking its just a small cut, well, I was wrong. The trench was a good 6 inches deep, and a good foot wide. Needless to say both of my passenger side wheels are bent, and the front is totally f**ked. I need some suggestions guys...

welcome to the club of bent rims. See what it feels like to bend rims and cost money to buy/fix a new pair.

Wow that sucks dude. I guess you can tell steve to give you a refund .
No you should take pictures of that place and take the city to court. They should pay for the damage. Thats what my friend did and it worked. They paid for his from passager wheel.

Yeah, well we'll see what i can do with the city. First I'll go in by myself and see what they say, then I'll get my parents and whatnot involved. I'm going to go by and take pics of the area tomorrow, hopefully they don't do any work on it or i'll be ****ed and f**ked. I'm off to cry myself to sleep now. Late guys...

I'm going through this crap right now. The DA of LA told me that it would take 6-9 months. I'm on month 2 right now, I took pictures of the pothole and of the city crew that was fixing it and sent those in. I also turned in an inspection copy of the rim shop that took a look at my bent rims. I didn't take pics at that time. I'm going to search for a city work order to fix that pothole. What ****es me off right now is that the DA won't answer my freaking calls!

Yep, when I was on the hondaprelude boards for a couple years, this would happen to many guys and got reembursed by their respective city's because of it. I have seen it happen. Might depend on the city though, obvisouly.

Something similar happend to an old friend of mine a while ago, but the hole was like 6ft deep and a good 8ft wide (I still say he's a blind dumb@ss) Needless to say he drove right into is and was kinda stuck.

Guess you gotta get new rims man, sorry.

Been there, done that. Here's what you do. IMMEDIATELY! Take detailed pictures of the construction zone. Include detailed photos as well as area photos, i.e. pictures of the zone as you approach from 1/2 mile, 1/4 mile, 1/8 mile, etc. Include any photos of warning signs if any and their exact placement. Take all photos at your eyelevel height as if you were sitting in your vehicle. Pictures standing my give a better view of the hole. File an accident report with the police. Maybe they will have others on record. Send a letter to the City Manager and include a copy of the police report and your repair estimates from three reputable repair shops. CC: your correspondence to the City Manager to all City Council Members and Mayor. Do not threaten lawsuit in this letter, just be polite and request necessary repairs be paid by the City. If no reply, Go to City Council meeting in open forum and plead your case. No voted in politician wants it on public record that they don't take care of their people. Finally, if all else fails, and you have kept detailed records, take the City to small claims court. Good Luck and don't give up.

Went to discount tire. The repair on the rims is gonna cost more than new ones. They wrote me an invoice for $531 after tax and 2 new rims, and I just got off the phone with Scottsdale police. They are gonna have an officer contact me. Discount said my rims are undriveable, so John, Hitmanse, is doing me a huge favor by helping me swap the rims with my stock ones! I'll keep you guys posted!

Here are some pictures of the area. I was a lil off on my calculations, the dip is actually 4 inches deep and 53 INCHES WIDE! There are no signs other than 'BUMP' which I will take a picture of, AND the road was partly paved today, meaning yesterday, when i hit it, it was EVEN DEEPER!

File a claim in the City which it occured in and call out a failing Trench. It is supposed to be no more than 1" below the existing surface. I hate when contractors don't do their job. I guarantee there is insurance and a deposit on file for this job. Don't buy new rims, have the city buy them for you. It's the imspectors fault. Good luck....

You'll have to deal with risk management. They are impossible to deal with and are trained at screwing you. I would be shocked if you see a penny from them if it doesn't go to court.

As far as I am concerned, i did nothing wrong. This area was not properly lit, was not properly warned, and was not properly covered. If there really is a law that the trench can't be more than an inch deep, this shouldn't be hard, ITS 4!
