If it works with the windows down, you don't need refrigerant. Sounds like an electronic glitch... do you have the automatic A/C controls? Unless you have driven the heck out of it and passed the 36K mark, aren't you still in the warranty period??? Good Luck.

Fo rhow long does this happen each time (few minutes or a whole drive) and also do you have controls set to recirc at the time this happens?

If on recirc, it COULD happen that the air inside the car is so much hotter than outside air that several passes through the recirc cycle might be needed to cool it down while when you have the windows down you have already evacuated the hottest air to the outside so new air gets cooler faster. Of course if your problem does not cure itself within a few mintutes then it might be something else.

If you have a cool advisor he will document the car with under 36,000 if your barely over it and save you some dough!

My AC isnt goin crazy but it is noticeably, err not as cold as the Ac was on my used '97 3000GT. That AC was cold to the point where you could see your breath when it was on maxed. In my 03Max (only has 6k miles) the AC seems rather mediocre. Maybe it needs to be charged?

For some reason this is just the way it is. I know my Max doesn't have the cooling power of my 7 year old truck.

Funny you mention that - the trucks I've had (to clarify, GM trucks and not the crappy Explorer I have right now) have had the COLDEST a/c of anything I've ever driven.

American cars have american compressors....Japanese cars USUALLY have japanese compressors....

It just so happened my 02 Altima had an american compressor (I guess cuz it was made here) which meant that my 02 altima definitely had colder a/c than this maxima.

American compressors OWN japanese compressors in so far as coldness and air volume, any given day of the week. As for which will last longer, I would assume japanese.
