Problems with my '03
Problems with my '03
I hear a rubbing sound when in reverse or when I have the wheel cut all the way from a stand still going forward. These noises will only happen sometimes at very very low speeds, ie when I am parrellel parking. The noise comes from the front of the car (engine bay or below).
The thing that gets me is my max only has 1400 miles on it. Its an '03 that I picked up less than 2 months ago..wtf!
Another thing I noticed on my car that is not right is the free-play on the E-brake handle. I can pick it up 2-3 inches before I feel tension. Is this normal? Are both problems descibed normal??
I will bring it back to the dealer when I hit 3,750 for oil. Just wanted to know who else had these problems..

rubbing sound with wheels cranked all the way sounds like power steering (normal) as for reverse if its an auto it might be normal too. my e brake has play in it too not 2-3 inches but a little.

E brake isn't normal.
The rubbing sound I dunno. Actually I'm interested since I have that too.
My father was in teh car when it happened first. He thinks that you're really not supose to lock the wheel, that doing so is bad for the power steering (on all cars).

i have the same e-brake play but the dealer told me it is normal. take that for what it's worth. the only thing i have to say about that is, i feel like it didnt have that play until one day i had my rear end jacked up and i pulled the e-breake extra hard to make sure the car didnt go anywhere. it felt like i broke the e-brake in some way and then afterward i noticed the little but if "play" as i keep calling it. it could have just been in my head but ill never know.

I wonder if there's an easy adjustment of the e-brake cable to get rid of that play.

yes there is. get under the car. where the cable goes back the rear wheels there is a place to adjust the tention of the cable. it will shorten it so there will not be any play in it. i dont know exactly where it is on a Max but it would be easy to find.
