Rear Spoiler

I am wondering if the factory spoiler is functional in term of aerodynamic (lessen the coefficient of drag or producing more downforce at higher speed) or just for sporty looks? I am thinking of getting one but IMO, the factory spoiler doesn't look too appealling for my taste. The rear of the 5th gen. Maxima is round and oddly shaped (tear-drop tail lights) and the factory spoiler doesn't seem to blend in too well with the rear-end design. I like the trunklid looks of the I35 or the Lexus IS300. Any of you guys know if there is/are any aftermarket company/ies with different spoiler designs for 5th gen. Maxima?

Use the search for 5th gen spoilers and you should find two.

Thanks but I've seen that before. I am looking for a trunklid looks, similar to the Infiniti I35 or the Lexus IS300.

The trunklid from either of those cars won't fit on your maxima...

The I35 spoiler will probably fit...you might want to try someplace like spoilerdepot and ask them if you can buy it, see if it will fit, and if not - let you return it to get your money back.

I also have great interest in a trunk lid lip style spoiler(like on a q45). I have posted Qs asking about this but I had no luck. I think it would look great.

Here is a link to a pic of the type of spoiler that I am talking about. Look at the Q45 at the top of the page. Were you thinking the same thing?

If there was a wing like that I would buy it right away!!! Can anyone photoshop me one. My car is grey lustre but I wouldn't mind to see it on any color 5th gen. Max.

I was wondering about the aerodynamics of the spoiler. I've noticed that the CD on the SE model is .31, while on the GXE and GLE (both without spoilers stock) it is .32. does this have anything to do with the spoiler or is it the ride height?? the height of the SE is slightly lower than that of the GLE (not sure about the GXE) i believe the GLE has the same factory ground effects as the SE, only real difference I can see is the spoiler. anyone know if this reduces drag?

Spoilers/wings do not reduce drag...they increase it by being in the way of the airflow. They produce downforce by forcing the air to move in a manner contrary to smooth flow along the body of a vehicle (at least this is the case where they actually make a difference (i.e. high speed racing, Indy, strips, etc.)).

No they don't. That is why (other than some factory ones to 'complete the lines' of a car's appearance) it is SOOO laughable when you see FWD's with huge *** wings!!

ya i know about the downforce deal for RWD cars (always laugh histerically when FWD civics have wings large enough to provide 500 lbs of downforce). i didnt think that the spoiler would reduce drag as it does discontinue the smooth lines of the car. so why is it then that the SE has a lower CD? hmm... must be the height of the car?

Do you think you could take measurements of the trunk lid of your car when you get a chance. I would like to compare. If you also have the contact info. for the guy you bought that from that would be of great help to me. Thanks alot. Your car looks great!

Sure, I'll take measurements for you. And I got it from "MaxMojo" on this board. You can PM him or go to his website: http://www.paradox-systems.com
