I did a search and was reading all of the posts on how easy it is to crack your windshield while trying to install the mirror yourself. I was wondering if it was worth the trouble to install it, or if it was worth getting. I like the compass feature that it has. I was thinking of getting one, but decided to see what everyone had to say.

The Nissan mirror does not have the compass, just some of the aftermarket versions...

don't all the 2k1 max's have them....

i got a 2k1 GXE, and it has the auto dimming rear view mirror. anyways, i just said that cause he only mentioned the AE max, but i think all 2k1's with c&c have them. well my opinion is that if it really is that hard to install, to where the windshield can crack, then dont get it. unless you are doing a lot of night driving, or light of suv's really bothers you, its not worth it. doesn't it cost a couple hundred bucks? the auto dimming mirror on camry's is a $300 option, ridiculous imho.

I love it

it does take a little getting used to. Everything has a sort of pukey yellow tint to it at night. But I don't even notice that anymore. I don't notice the a**hole in his suburban doing 45 in the left lane flashing his brights at me for going "too darn fast" either...

ye sometime the inside of the windshield breaks off a little but its not that bad.. it doesnt always happen... u can always take it to a shop they will charge u like $20 but if they break it they will be liable... the original autodiming mirror is made by Gentex for nissan... it costs like $100 at

http://www.lovecars.com/store/mirrorhome.htm

that is the exact one they use in nissans except in nissan the case says nissan instead of gentex (internal components are identical) the other one they have there that says its for a corvette is the one with the compass and stuff like that... that is made by donnelly mirrors... i forgot there website but its like $200 on their website... i am probably going to get the one with the compass soon...

you have to call them and ask them for the basic model that is just autodimming without the other features... that is the exact one they use in nissans except in nissan the case says nissan instead of gentex (internal components are identical) the other one they have there that says its for a corvette is the one with the compass and stuff like that... that is made by donnelly mirrors... i forgot there website but its like $200 on their website... i am probably going to get the one with the compass soon...

Personally...I say its not worth it. The only reason I have the mirror is because it was part of the package. I think the thing is annoying as hell and keep it turned off.

My $.02

I made a call to Dave today and there are two versions of the auto dim mirror avaliable. One has both a compass and the ambient temp reading, and one just has a compass.

Get the Gentex from lovecars.com... you'll save a few bucks. If you're in L.A., they're located downtown, so I called ahead and picked mine up.

Some people said their mirror slid right off. I personally think it's worth the $20-30 to make it someone else's liability! Just do the wiring yourself since that would probably cost bank to get done somewhere.

I love my mirror, but I think it's a personal preference. The mirror darkens based upon the glare, so unless there's someone SUV's brights shining directly into the mirror, it's always easier to see behind you than the traditional mirror in the night position (which is just always dark).

The OEM auto dimming mirror w/ compass and ambient temp display is only $181.25 (plus shipping, about four dollars) from Dave at Southpoint Nissan. You might wanna check that out instead.

Quite franly its Annoying ... darkens the mirror making it a dark green!

You can even tell if there is a cop in your rear view once
its dimmed, and its WAY to sensitive!!!

So i went and bought a LARGE SPORT "Hypics" mirror and put it on top! Large and clear!!

Yeah - I think its a personal preference....
I do a lot of night time driving and takes the strain off my eyes...

True - Nissan should've had the driver side exterior mirror to be dimming as well...

Have driven a few cars that had this -- I think it makes sense to have both together -- becoz the a$$hole in the SUV usually annoys me "via" the side mirror

Wish I could get cop like lights, so I can shine it right at him once I let him pass !

Mine must be broken, because I cannot figure out what the hell the thing is supposed to do. I have turned it on and off at night and can't seem to tell the difference. Do you have to have somebody giving you the high beams for it to actuate?

You should notice something at night. You can test it fairly easily... just shine a flashlight into the front light sensor at night. If it's daytime, cover up the sensor in the back with your finger -- it should start dimming from the sunlight shining into it from the front. It takes a couple seconds to darken and lighten fully.

All you have to do is learn how to flip the switch.

It sounds kinda split between some liking it and some not liking it. I'm still worried about the installation, so I think I might put it off for now. But then again, the desire could rekindle within a week (or less).

Okay, you win. It's (95%)authentic, but missing it's (95%)"flair". LOL...just playing with ya. Maybe I'm wrong about them being avaliable. Last I heard was that they were going to be coming out.

do they have a digital temp/compass...

cause getting a new rear view mirror with temp and compass will be kinda expensive, and i dont even use that auto dim feature much (cause i dont drive at night a lot), is there like a little digital one that i can put on my dash? something small with a lcd screen that tells the inside/outside temp, and the direction (other features would be nice to) things like that should be standard, my dads 93 caravan has a digital compass, temp, average mpg, current mpg, even tells him how many miles he can go onthe amount of gas left.
