IS the new 3.5 litre engine in the 02 max and up really that much better in performace vs. the 3.0 litre engine???? Or is it really not that much of a difference???

We have both in the family - VQ30 (167,000 miles) and VQ35 (41,000 miles).

The VQ35 has variable valve timing, and other improvements over the VQ30, in addition to oodles of power and torque.

Interesting item, today I helped my son put a knock sensor on his VQ30. That's the first "repair" this car has needed (other than minor body work from people backing into it). Original engine and tranny, exhaust system, original light bulbs (except for one headlight). This car is still quiet, smooth, shifts beautifully, and doesn't even whimper. Now with the Knock sensor replaced, it has its gonads back. If this Max was not as good as it is, I would not have bought the '02.

The VQ35 is a major step ahead, a real BMW killer (not the M5, don't get excited).

The 3.5L is a much more powerful engine.

not only does the extra 32 hp make a big difference when both cars are pushed to the max, but the 3.5L motor has much better daily driveability because its low end torque is significantly greater. it's almost american car like in its abundance of low end torque.

this topic has been talked to death, try searching next time. you'll find very good info.
