Air Filter

Hey everyone,

My stock air filters has pretty much had it so what should i do now? Should i go for a High end air filter like K&N or save and do an air intake? How much more performance am I going to see for a new air intake? and what is the cost?

thanks Joel

Re: Air Filter

Get an Injen CAI or Place Racing CAI. The performance gains are awesome. I never really noticed any gain w/ a K&N drop in.

I've had both. The K&N flows a bit better than stock, but any gain is minimal (maybe 1 hp?) and about $40 but will last a long time with periodic cleaning.

I now have the Injen. Throttle response is a bit quicker and the sound is awesome. Not exactly sure of HP gains...maybe 5? I really like the Injen and it's the best looking intake, if that's a consideration. About $230 shipped.

The injen makes more like 8, but alot of tq. The PR makes similar gains.

What type of throttle response are you talking about...low or high? Everything I've read on here says you take a noticeable loss of low end torque with the Injen.

where are you reading this?? The short intakes (frankencar, JWT) lose all the low end, esp on autos. The long tubes make more tq all over the rev band, but less overall hp. The short ones make more HP, but higher in the rev range, but lose tq all the way thru esp in the low end.

By throttle response I mean that when I step on the gas, the engine revs quicker. I have not lost any low end torque. I agree with E55AMG2, low end is great with the Injen. From what I've read there is a loss of some HP in the highest revs with the Injen compared to the Frankencar type.

Well, to be honest that goes against everything I've heard on here. Everyone says Injen you lose low end but gain on the high end.

Here's what i know about WAI's and CAI's.

WAI's tend to make a lot more power up high, but may suffer from heat soak when the car is idling. It also helps the car breathe better in the higher rpm range.

CAI's tend to give you a lot more low-end torque due to the minimal heat soak when idling and such. However, it doesn't make as much power up-high like the WAI - think more like breathing through a straw, that's how a CAI works.

Granted, a lot of people would say the Injen is not a true CAI as the filter still sits well inside the engine bay.

Going back to the first post, if you just want to replace your filter - it doesn't matter much which one you get. I went and bought a Microgard filter from Autozone (or was that O'Reilly, forgot). Unlike the OEM, it's a dry-type filter. I like having more HP, but right now i'd rather try finding better means of putting that HP to the ground first. (e.g. better rubbers, suspension and the like)
