Rust problem?

Rust problem?
I know this should probably go into the general forum, but since it's a question about a 5th gen car here goes.
I have a pretty good sized deep rock chip on my left front tire well/fender. It's starting to turn rust colored slightly. I have never been able to get a good match and usually screw up with touch up paint from the dealer. What do I do?

It's hard to say cause I can't see the chip so use your judgement on this one, if it can be dealt with the below method.
You can use naval jelly(home depot) to first neutralize the rust thats there, the problem is it also eats paint so u would have to be able to control its area of flow. You then cure it with baking soda. Then take touch-up paint and apply it with a drip off style of the end of a toothpick.
hope that helps

Can you explain in detail the steps on how to apply the Naval Jelly and baking soda? For instance, how long to let each sit or do I rub it in? Funny thing is the chip has been there for months with rain and not a hint of discoloration. Within2-3 days the chip is almost completely rust.

The naval jelly bottle has directions. It has some warnings about using on paint. Please read that.
My use: It's pink and jelly-like I apply it of the end of a toothpick. Let it sit for around 5 min at a time. The rust will blacken, wipe off then take a mix of baking soda and water to cure it. After its cured dry the area and prep it for paint.
