***top Speed****

On Mopac in Austin, a little before the Spicewood Springs exit heading north, I hit the speed limiter on my 2k 5spd (place racing intake, y-pipe, b-pipe)
at around 135-140 (215/40 17" dunlop sp 9000)
The tach was at 5000 or maybe 5500 (was about 6 months ago, didn't really pay too much attention to the gauges when going that fast), and it felt like I had bounced of the red line. I kept the pedal down and sure enough, it did it again. Since my exit was approaching (fast, heh), I gave it a rest.

When I dynoed my car last time we did a speed run on my 2k SE Auto. I have an RSM w/ speed limiter cut and it got up to 144 mph B4 the the car went into some kind of fail safe and turn O/D off and I didn't want to take no chances and shut it down. I got the graph to prove but no scanner.

i had an 02 gle that i hit 135 in all the time.never went over because of traffic.i have an 03 se auto now and same thing never clear enough to go over 135.hit 135 tonight on way home from work.four to midnight makes for nice drives home on I-55 south

I could have sworn that the top speed on any 3.5L was in the low to mid 140's (on SE's only) due to drag limitation. The GLE's are all 130 I believe, since they all have the 130 MPH rated tires. And as for 155 on a stock or relatively stock 3.0L...whatever. You must have been on PCP and started hallucinating...

As for this thread, I'll just add that I have gone over 140mph in my Max while running against a TL-S. The TL-S (auto tranny and all) is good for 145mph+ and I pretty much kept 2 car legnths ahead at this speed. The acceleration at this speed pretty much just trails off to nil as opposed to hitting a speed governor. Likewise, I had a runin with a current gen Eclipse GT-S (good for 144mph top speed) and ran even with him @ speed.
I've driven several cars where I hit the speed governor and I can say from experience that my 2K2 Max SE (auto) is not ECU governed @ 130mph.
Peace.

I've been 135mph (speedo) in my AE (auto), and she just wouldn't go any faster. I never hit a "limiter", I just couldn't stroke any more out of her. But what you guys are saying is that with a little work I could be good for 140+? What do I need for more speed? I love freeway runs!

No offence, but just after reading the first page, I must say this talk of 120-130mph+ speeds disturbs me. Where and why are you going to go that fast without endangering your own self and a pole at the very least? Granted, I've hit speeds exceeding 130 a handful of times in my life, but it generally didn't last long enough to count, and it was also in my younger days... not smart unless you're in Deutschland on the autobahn...

Also, that was up a slight incline with typical AZ weather. I'd be willing to bet with colder temps and downhill or with a tail wind I could hit 155mph. However, I'm not testing that until I get new tires.

I took that into account already, the GPS read 157.30. I know the GPS has that error built in. It reads 3 mph sittin still, but the error is always 3mph (checked with a radar gun). Then I took off the 5% and got like 146.96.

It may shock some folks, but street cars can be modified to drive high triple-digit speeds and still be considered "safe"...
Off my soapbox now...

Hey wassup guys, im just replying to the thing about governors. Governors are hardly ever accurate. I have a 1995 Pontiac Grand AM SE 3100 V6 that's supposed to be limited at 108 but I have pictures of my speedometer completely buried past 115 where it ends. I'd be more than glad to post. The people over at the Grand AM club website have been told that the computer will cut down the fuel flow if you're aggressively trying bypass the governor. When I max out the grand am, ill push it about half way and anything more than that over 108 and the car will back off completely and you wont be able to speed up again until 105. The Maxima on the other hand I've had up to 145 and it still had more left...for sure. I've got a 2k SE auto with 43000 if it makes any difference. If the max is anything like the grand am...it will slow you down if you have the pedal to the floor, otherwise hold it down about 3/4 and you should be able to bypass 140 easily. Just my .02.

SR2, I'm not trying to bash you, but I'm really sick of hearing the "speedo error" argument. I've checked mine with my GPS (including WAAS), and it's off .3 mph at 70, and .6 mph at 100. So the theory is that within 30 miles an hour above a hundred, suddenly it pukes and goes 5+ mph off? Sorry, I don't buy it...

Nope, governors are accurate at the computer level based on your tach. Most all speedometers are inaccurate at speeds above 130, and it seems to be based on the ambient temp as to how far your speedo is off. Remember, most speedometers are mechanical, so they will make mistakes. As for the argument I've heard "the computers lifts my pedal off the floor at 130", that is just plain wrong. The ECU cuts fuel at a certain level then gives it back.
As for your Maxima, the SE limiter is much higher because of a different ECU program based on the rating of your tires.
I think it's funny that this is a top speed thread and so many people have posted "I've had mine up to 1xx, and it had much more to go!!!" If you had it that fast, why not top it out for real?
My $.02
