Loss of Power

I've noticed the last 2 weeks my 2002 SE Max seems to be very weak when gunning it from a stop. I have an automatic. What happens is I just about floor it (To try and avoid being run over while merging on Palisades Pkwy!) and it starts off real slow. Eventually it picks up, but it doesn't have the power it used to. It used to roar through all the gears, now it doesn't seem to pick up until 2nd.

I've got 20,000 mi. on it, and had the 13,000 maint. done to it. I don't think it's the plugs yet and the stock airfilter looks good too. I use 93 Octane, and my AC is off. Has anything like this occured to anyone else. My only mod is an FSTB, so everything else is stock.

I know there's a hesitation TSB, but like I mentioned, this just started happening.

Maybe it's the humid weather?

Thanks...

hmmmm....could be anything....just bring it back to the dealer and get it checked out before anything more serious surfaces.

I have a 2002 Maxima SE too & I have the same feeling. When the temperature is lower, the engine seems to perform better.

I noticed that there is a TSB for auto transmission for loss of power. I might bring the TSB & ask the dealer to check it. There is another TSB on the rear O2 sensors. I think I will ask them to check both TSB to be on the safe side. Will do this when I am back after a 5 week vacation back home.

I noticed that, but i just had major service, oil change, throttle body cleaned, fuel injectors, the works etc...

It runs good again.

Perhaps you need a new air filter also... It can also be the weather.

Do the TSB, and you wont regret it. I was one of the 1st autos to have it done and it made a night and day difference.

Is anyone here familiar with the control loop (digital or analog) from the throttle by wire, the MAF, O2 sensors, and computer calculation time? If you backed off on the throttle and then tried re-accelerating does the problem go away?

What I am getting at is whether or not the control loop sampling time (if it is a digital throttle by wire) is trying to co-ordinate with the other analog signals via the computer control algorithm is occasionally causing a loss of power? The computer senses the throttle position possibly giving a proportional input voltage (via a transducer which has a time lag) and the computer also senses the MAF, controls the NDIS, meters the fuel injection and if some or perhaps any of these become mis-coordinated the engine backs up to a fall back idle point (reset) until the operator stops giving input via the throttle for a moment and then the system can resume normally?

I assume a situation like this is very rare, but if anyone could offer a good reason why it could not happen and explain it via the characteristics of the control loop that would help give a solid answer. Thanks.

I will change the air filter when I come back from my trip. I have abt 10k miles & it is abt 1 yr + ago that I have this air filter. I agree that it is time to change the air filter.

But at the same time I will also do the TSB.

How do u clean the throttle body ? just wipe it down with a damp cloth ?

It's been like soup outside here in NJ. Not the best for performance. There's less oxygen in the moist dense air and heat is not your engines friend.

Wait till this weather cracks and see how your car performs.

Ditto for my 2002 auto, new MAF and reprogram from NTB03-023 and TRUST ME, if you have a 2002 or 2003, GET THIS DONE even if you have to try 50 dealers to get a YES!!

you know, i just dont see it with my car any "hesitation" My max was one of the first 2002 6 speeds with no hlsd. I figure my car is in the selection of cars that has this issue, i just don't notice anything weird to be honest.

I'm still not even sure what you guys mean by hesitation, I assume it's something very obvious?

I got the hesitation TSB done & they only updated the ECU -- no new MAF even though the build date is like 2/2002. The new MAFs they're puttin in under this TSB, are they the ones less likely to fail w/a new intake?
