but then backed out in the last minute? i almost bought a 2000 camry le v6 and a 2000 accord se v6.
i went to the toyota dealer first, my dad's friend had bought 7 toyota's from that dealership in the past 4 years (he's a toyota freak), and he told my dad that camry's are good, reliable cars, so my dad wanted me to get a camry. i wanted the cheapest v6 they had, from about 25 camry's, they had one v6! it was a black le v6, all power, cloth seats, airbags, power drivers seat, jbl cd/tape, price, $25.5k!!!!! i looked at the salesman and said, "are you kidding?" it didn't even have alloys! but i did test drive it, and it wasn't bad at all, its a good car, but since it was too expensive (imho, it was too much) i went to the next dealership, honda.
i quickly walk through the lot and find NO v6's. i asked the salesman where all the "GOOD" accords were, he said that he had a rare accord inside the dealership. i walk inside and there was a two-tone (red on top, beige on bottom) accord, it looked good. it had alloys, spoiler, even had some body kit (not a good one though), but it still had one, had an "SE" emblem on the back and stitched into the seats, it looked pretty sharp, i even liked the color, had all options, and was $23k, i thought it was a little cheap, had like 10 miles on it, so i ask,"whats the catch?" he said no catch, so i look at it carefully and notice that its not a v6. i was pissed, why would you do all that stuff to a 4-cyl car? i would have bought it, but i didn't want a cheesy 135hp i4. so i just went to the nissan dealership and bought a 2k1 gxe.

If the Galant V6 came with a stick I probably would have bought it instead of my SE.

I almost bought an Acura TL or a Mazda Millenia. If I had to make the choice again, I think I would still choose the Maxima.

I liked the Galant as well
I test drove the galant and I was impressed with the car. I really liked the outside but the inside I didn't care for. It was really bland and like you said ....noooo stick 4 you!! I also didnt like the two colors of interior you could choose from. If you wanted the black interior you had to get the GTZ. Also...one other thing that I disliked was the fuzzy ****z that the decided to put right where your arm would be resting. I just knew that this material would look really crapy in no time at all since the only colors they had were beige and a light gray color.

I considered a Galant as well (my Dad has a '90 but is a 4 cylinder). I wanted a manual ('cause I think they're more fun), so I went to the Max... Haven't looked back since (except that slow pokes in the mirror) and glad I chose what I did -- a sedan that can keep up with a V6 Eclipse...

I almost got a Crown Vic, I like the 4.6 but my parents wouldn't let me get the GT. Then I realized I didn't want a boat car so I took the Max which has more HP and about the same turning radius.

Looked at several cars
I looked at the passat v6, acura tl, lexus is,and the max. After all was said and done it came down to the passat and max because I really wanted a stick, though I almost bought the IS (that thing sticks to the road really nice) but power is a little weak with the auto and it's a little small. Thought for the money the max was the best deal. The 222 ponies are a blast, as is the roar of the engine above 3000 rpm. Given the chance to do it all again, I'd still get the max.

Almost bought an Aurora...
Hi Gang,

Bought my 2K Max used for around 25K Canadian, and shopped for a 99-00 Olds Aurora. There was about a 4-5K price difference (used), plus I was trading in my 98' Altima (which Olds had no use for).

Still happy with my Max though!

I also had considered the TL and Millennia
Looked at Acuras, even though the deal is sweet but it was a big out of my range at the time. As of the Millennia, I'm having second thoughts about it since I didn't actually go to the dealer and check it out...

After having two 92 & 93se's, I decided to go with something diff this time. I almost ended up getting '00 Jetta 1.8 t silver for about 21-22k. But I'm glad I got what I got now for only $18k with 26k miles. Still smelled like new.

My next choice was the the 2000 Accord V6. It was sort of like the Max, but not as nice IMHO. I picked the Max because it would be unique if modified... you can find modded Accords left and right.

I went to the dealer with a quote on a Grand Prix GT from carsdirect and asked him to match and he couldn't come close. Tried the same thing with a Passat with same results. If either dealer had bit, I would have bought. I plan on keeping my car for 8-10 years and I thought it over and decided I didn't want to take a chance on the reliability of thoses cars. I love my Max, but wish I had waited for a 5 speed.

The Maxima was the only car that fit the special racing rear seat that I have. (AKA Baby Seat)

I really wanted the A4 1.8t Quattro and the chip. Great car but way too small to fit a family. Now that I'm with child, that basically wrote off the IS300, 3 series BMW among others. The GS300/400 are even smaller in the backseat than the Maxima.

Although I love my car, the Audi and IS300 are sweet cars, just too small

i almost bought well my dad almost bought me a jetta vr6 5spd.. but they didn't have the color i wanted on the lot that day.. i wanted the dark blue. that car fits me real well cuz i'm small and skinny dn all. i wanted a four door, then i was lookin' at the a4.. the price was alot higher so my dad said. he'd rather get me a jap car and pay a lil extra because jap cars come withmore options and are most of the time more reliable.. i cruised by the nissan dealership goign to jack in the crack and then saw an odd looking fourdoor car and my jaws dropped. went into the dealership, got a brochure sat in the showroom car, and taht was it.. went home told my dad and he said make sure u like it first.. and then he also suggested the i30 and i said, nahh it's basically the same car but cost a few thousand more.. so i said i wanetd the max.. then he left to go to tiawan and my mom took me to get the car.. ever since then i love my max.. and any max.. 5th gen especially. i started out wanting the jetta becasue i wanted my parents to finacnce it, and when i got a job i could take over the finance. but they didn't let me.. so i'm happy all is well and i still love the max.. but if the acura cl 3.2 type S came out earlier i wulda got taht instead..

my choices were:
93 300zx TT - 12.80s in a 1/4mile, mildly modified. Super clean. But, had 90K miles and the engine was beginning to smoke. He wanted $16K.

2K Celica GT-S - Test drove it, loved the handling, talked to the sales people, they wanted too much...next.

2K Dodge Dakota RT - Since i had a race car in the garage that need trailing, i was looking for a truck. This was the only one i would have purchased...but, there were NONE in town. Next...

93-98 Supra TT - Insurance woulda reamed me, plus, i couldn't find one.

end so, i ended up getting the Max.

I have owned a 90 maxima gxe and a 95 maxima gxe and both were excellent. Raced the shi* out of the 95 on the scca stock circ and never had a single problem. looked at the volvo s70t5 and the passat. I liked the Volvo, but it was too pricy and small. The passat was also a good choice but the maxima has proven reliability and lots of room. 2000 maxima se need i say more?

I tested multiple vechiles. 3.2TL but found noisy on the A pillars and the styling too conservative. 300is really nice but with options I wanted the 300is was another $10k and this is a first year vechile. Accord V6 and Camry V6 but both these vechiles did not have the same features as the Maxima(sports suspension , engine V6 smoothest, Bose system best of the three and the comfort excitement of driving in the Maxima). I tested several other vechiles but for the price range I was willing to pay the Maxima was the best choice. I purchase 2k1 AE Maxima and would make the same decision again. The engine in this vechile is awsome. If I had a significant more funds for a vechile I would choose a BMW 330 with the sports package and load the vechile up.

For me, I had to choose between a Passat V6, Impala, and the Max. The Passat was very nice but more expensive. The Impala was very roomy inside but drove like a boat even with the sport suspension. I went with a 2K Max GXE because even though it's smaller inside than the Impala, it gives a lot more bang for the buck. Besides, I like to autocross once in a while and even though Maximas are not that common and it's a tight squeeze for me with a helmet, I've never seen an Impala out there. Also, the Nissan dealer gave me a much better deal on my 92 Max SE I was trading in.

test drove a camry xle v6, accord coupe ex v6, solara sle v6, 99&00 maxima se, and the galant gtz.

finally picked the 99 SE limited out of the various models.

still, I almost bought myself a blue solara sle if i went to the 2nd toyota dealer b/4 i went to the nissan dealer.

another option, but i never tested, is the 300M.
I love spacious cars.

Tough Choice
I had a deposit down on a 2000 Acura 3.2CL Type S, but teh payments were 150 dollars more a month. The Max was a better deal.

I wanted a V6

I had my heart set on the Honda Accord V6 coupe. My shopping list included the Camry Solara SLE, Passat GLS V6, and the Maxima SE. Here's what happened

Accord V6 coupe: I loved the looks of this car. But when I got inside the seats were VERY unconfortable. Why can't Honda make confortable seats!. The power on the VTEC is good but that automatic was a killer. I don't know why every automatic honda I've driven has that huge jerk between 1st and 2nd gear. I quickly discounted the Accord

Camry Solara V6: Strong V6. Confy seats, good Toyota quality, but boring. This car rides like a Buick.

Passat GLS V6: Leather Seats are HARD!!. No power seats in a car this price is unbelievable. Strong engine, very nice interior, I liked the Tiptronic feature. Terrible Warranty, and bad reputation for poor reliability. The Passat became my second choice, but I still don't trust VW. The Maxima had more room, more power, and better warranty/reliability.

the rest is history....

At first I was planning on buying a used Max..probably a 97. Looked at a few but didn't like the pricing....test drove a Jetta 1.8T and liked engine but I hated the clutch...it felt like I was going to put my foot thru the floorboards as there was almost zero resistance in it! Also the clutch felt like it was too far over to the right...my foot didnt fall naturally on it...had to hunt a bit. Wish it had been a better fit for me

Someone above mentioned the Impala. I just back from a 2 week trip to California and we rented one....just a regular version, not the LS. I gave it a really good test drive for sure. We went everywhere in that car. I was at March AFB in Moreno Valley and went to San Diego and up the PCH all the way to San Francisco and then back down thru the middle of the state thru Fresno, Bakersfield, stopped off at Edwards(in the middle of nowhere!)thru the mountains and snow and back into the desert. Also took it to Palm Springs, LA and Las Vegas.

True...the steering is a bit heavier than the Max's and it did feel and drive like a much bigger car. The car absolutely cruised at 85-95 with no problem at all and the ride had to be one of the most comfortable rides I have been in awhile. Definitly roomier than the Max by a longshot. The ride was also great even driving on what I regard as some of the worst pavement in the US....whats up with that California? Jeesh... A Max SE on those roads must be brutal!

I was expecting body roll galore in this car....nope...seemed like it was non-existant. The car took corners perfectly. I popped the hood and checked out the guts and it looks like there are all sorts of bars or whatever there to assist in handliing..it worked well even on the lesser model!

Some of the downers were that there were quite a few rattles which I didnt expect....but the car did seem to have 23k hard miles put on it...interior seemed a little cheap but not drastically. And forget about the glovebox! What a joke...a big door opens up to like a 6 inch opening where all the contents will spill out in you let it open all the way.....

All in all a really comfortable car and I'd love to test a LS version out...I think they look really sharp but then again I guess I like weird cars given I bought a Max

acura tl
i almost bought the acura tl instead of the maxima, cuz they cost almost exactly the same here in canada but of course i chose the max
cuz it came in white and the tl didnt, it had manual, it was faster, i liked the look more, and a lot of other stuff.
but the only thing i liked about the tl was the xenon lights

Wanted: 2000 Audi S4 6 speed

Got: 2000 Maxima SE 5 speed

The difference in lease prices was too much too ignore.
