Question For NJ Org Members!!!!
I want to get a performance muffler for my 2003 Maxima. Either a PowerTech, MagnaFlow, FlowMaster or Ravine. I was told by a muffler shop today that I couldn't do that because it would mess with my exhaust flow and I would automatically fail inspection. I can't understand this as these are just better mufflers then the stock one's. Then the guy said to me that if within the warranty any problems with the engine, Nissan would void the warranty saying the muffler was the reason. Anyone know anything about just putting a muffler on the stock exhaust and passing/failing at the DMV Inspection? All info is appreciated!!!!!

Sorry I just had to finish the sentence ..
So what does everyone think? Will a decent performance muffler cause me to fail inspection or is that just a farse the muffler place told me. This guy told me that all new cars cannot be altered due to the emmissions. He said the only muffler I can put on there is the same thing, a factory match. This makes no sense to me when outside companies make better mufflers then the factories. So anyways, it was Midas and I was looking to put on a Ravin Muffler.

First off, "performance muffler" is a bit of a misnomer. A muffler will certainly make your car louder, but the performance benefits will be negligible. If you really want to improve performance get yourself a y-pipe... the best $160 you can spend for your car.
Now back to the muffler situation... all the emissions-related work is done by your catalytic converter, so changing your muffler will not effect your ability to pass inspection. If your exhaust shop says differently, go somewhere else.

Thanks, really appreciate it. I was thinking of getting a catback exhaust but am going to wait awhile for Nissan actually Nismo to come out with some performance parts for the Maxima. I will probably get a Powertech Muffler for the car now just for the sound affects. Will wait till I get all the other problems with Nissan Settled: The Paint & The Rotors. By the way Nice Looking Maxima you have. Where abouts in NJ are you?
