difference between 2k2 auto vs 6spd

how much of a difference is there between a 2k2-2k3 auto vs. a 6spd one. wat are the average 1/4 mile times for each? does the 6spd really make that much of a difference?

It can make a huge difference "IF" you know how to drive one. With full interior and full tank of gas I can run 14.8's in my auto all day long at the track. Launching my auto perfectly and stripping weight gets me in the low 14.6's (and it's traction hampered at this point on stock tires/wheels)...

The story is that if driven properly, the 6 speed is faster in all conditions. The flip side of that is that the auto is far more easily modulated (DUH!) and is vastly more consistent (except for the few pros that run on this board). It's a bracket racing machine (I waxed a total of 27 Mustangs on seperate runs this year alone in bracket racing...all of them were 5 speeds). But I'll tell you true, I like the 6 speeds better

as far as modifying them, is there any major gain advantage of the 6spd over the autos in terms of hp?

yes, a manual tranny will get a larger percent of the power to the wheels, but not much at all--IMHO this only really matters when have a lot of mods

my auto ran 14.6 with just the vb mod and heavier 18" wheels--it all depends on what YOU wanna drive

it shifts our car a lot faster than stock valve body. it strengthens the valve body too. the biggest problem is if you dont live close to a shop that does it, u have to send in your original valve body to get the mod done. i think its like 3 or 500 dollars, somewhere in between there. its a good mod that just basically shifts the auto more sport than luxury. im not sure bout the warranty, though ask someone that has it, i've just picked all this up from searching but its down so i understand..

See... I would be so on top of this mod if I lived in the east coast. Anybody know a place that does VB mod in Cali?

With a manual its not so much a matter of shifting faster but a manual has better gear ratio, being that it has 2 more gears to work with...

Either way the answer is yes. If you run slicks on the auto, you can definetly hit 13's...

well I have trapped 99 on smaller diameter tires 22". A 6 spd is more fun too drive everyday but at the track I prefer Auto on slicks

I have always owned and will continue to own manuals for a number of reasons. Off the lot, they are inherently less expensive to buy. Manuals return better fuel mileage. They are marginally lighter than automatics and there are less parts to have problems with. And finally, if you do know how to drive it, the manual is quicker. Just my two cents. I've got a neon (which is a notoriously crappy car) that I commute with. It is coming up on 165,000 miles and I have had no transmission problems whatsoever. Haven't even had to tighten the clutch cable.

Go for the 6 speed . . . assuming you could drive well, you can pull a 14.3 ish 1/4 time, with the auto you're gonna do low 15's, high 14's at best.

I'd say mid 14s at best

I like my vb mod a lot. Mine was made by Don but I don't think he's involved with the maxima community anymore.

5spd Maxs' have a better gear ratio in 1st-3rd for the 1/4 mile. With the 6spds you have an extra shift from 3rd to 4th, that kind of negates some of the power to the ground advantage it has over an auto. So for 2k2 & 2k3's auto's & manual's are closer to even.

Now if we could just change out a few gears in the 6spd...

In perfect conditions the 6spd should run at best a 14.2 @ 98. An Auto in the same exact conditions should run 14.4 @ 95. My best of a 14.6 @ 93 was in warmer weather around 80 degrees.

With crappy drivers? You ran a 14.6 - there's more than two tenths of a second between that and a crappy driver (unless you suck )

I think you'd have to put those time into the "good" driver category.

true but I consider mid 14's 14.4-14.7 and high 14's 14.8-14.99 but thats just my logic.

No biggie I want mid 13's this winter

And you'll get it with ease, I'm sure blu...

We autos can definitely hold out own. I need to get smaller wheels/tires to get deeper into the 14's...then I'll start the engine/tranny mods

Yes it is a big difference(If driven my Brother-in-laws 2k2 six speed several times). I own a 2K3 auto and their isn't a day that goes by where I wish that I would have bought a 6-spd. I used to always contemplate on trading my auto for a 6-spd, but I knew that I would have been raped by the dealer if I traded in my Max.

Low 14's = 14,14.1,14.2,14.3
Mid 14's = 14.4,14.5,14.6
High 14's = 14.7,14.8,14.9's

whatwe are saying ga2000 is that 02/03 auto should be a mid-high 14 car stock, manuals should be low 14's stock. Its been proven and beaten to death in tons of threads as this is asked at least twice a week.
