Hotshot headers out for the Altima 3.5
Cracking on first gen Hot Shot Headers:
Being a metallurgist by trade (not by degree), I thoroughly inspected the headers for signs of minor stress cracks when I prototyped these for Hot Shot with my altima.
Good news/Bad news all at once: I found fairly severe erosion and some mild pitting in the inside walls of the pipe (helps to have access to a boroscope). The good news is I found NO cracking even minor stuff after 2 weeks of SERIOUSLY hard driving with them on the car. I told Jon at Hot Shot about this and I am pretty sure that is what delayed the final model (aside from the CEL with no cats). This is just a gut feel, as there was pretty severe erosions on the headers for only being on the car two weeks.
I don't know what the cause of the cracking on previous editions of the HS headers for other cars, but this could very well be it. Some of the bends were too tight as well causing hot gas to impinge on the outside of each turn, which contributed to the erosion.
I don't normally post here so if you got any feedback hit me up at altimas.net as snolden.

I just wanted y'all to know that the metallurgy aspect of the cracking had been looked at including the relative corrosion potentials of the weld filler vs. the bulk metal. Jon has had lots of input from his various sources (some are direct Nissan sources) regarding the fabrication of these.
