Rusty brake rotors after being wet. Why?

After it rains or after I wash my car my brake rotorts get rusty. However, when I drive it after that, it will go away? I've never had this on my other cars. Is it happening to you? Is this bad?

No big deal.
Nissan rotors apparently have a high iron content.

Surface rust on rotors is frequent on most cars.
I live in Montreal where the rust can (will) develop on rotors specially during cold fall and spring humid nights and mornings. You can hear the rust make a grinding noise when you drive off the car. After 4 to 6 stops, the pads will wear out or sand down you might say the thin surface rust coat. This rotor rust is so serious if you dont drive the car every day, hence removing daily the light surface rust, the rotors will eventually rust deeper and wear out prematurily way before the life expectancy of 100 000 km, well at least in my area. ALso rear rotors rust much more than front ones. Not sure why. Perhaps there is less pad pressure on the rear wheels to sand off the surface rust ?

Hmmm. I've noticed that front rotors rust more than rear rotors.

I think it's more common among foreign cars. I've owned a few GM cars and trucks and never had that happen. My Maxima will almost start rusting overnight.

Sounds like a good explanation to me on the rear rotors, and good info in general as well.

Bahahahahaha! Right. My Cavalier, my Mom's Grand Prix, my Dad's Silverado, and my GF's Intrigue all rust more than my Max. Maybe you moved to a different climate when you bought the Max?

Anyways, this is perfectly normal. It's bare metal after all. Can't exactly paint and clear coat your rotors to protect them from oxidation, now can we?

Yes, but I wouldn't recommend it.

mine do that too. But I have to say I love what ever type of stock brake pads Nissan uses. I am on my 4th Nissan and I have never had a brake dust issue. I had a Talon and Eclipse b4 and was forever having to clean brake dust off the rims.

Yeah, the dust isn't that bad. It's actually quite horrible on some BMWs that I've seen. That really surprised me.

Soft grippy pads == dust
Hard pads less grippy = no dust
You want dust slip on a set of carbon fiber brake pads. Once they get up to temp you'll stop so quick it'll hurt your eyeballs!! Of course until they get up to temp you may want to have some shoes with thick soles on.
Of course your wheels will be black as sin as well.
I used to have to clean the wheels on my Alfa & Audi way more than the car's exterior.
Dirty rims are just a sign of a lazy owner!
