I'd recommend this 6speed to anyone- It looks like
some people are runnin' out of shyt to talk about
so they post every little inconsistency they notice about the car - Which is fine, but is it really a problem(bad tranny out of the box)?
overall I think its a good tranny
and as every other manual -it takes gettin used to
and allow a break in period
my old Mazda lost its notchiness after 60K

Just from looking at the respondants to this thread, it seems like the problems are more with the 2k2's than the 2k3's. When I first got my 2k3, I couldn't stand the notchiness of the shifter. Then, after a couple of months, it broke in, and it became pretty smooth. I don't even have that 2nd to 3rd shifting nightmare that everyone keeps talking about. So, does that mean that I like the tranny? Not really. I mean, still, compared to a lot of other cars in its category (or even lower), the shifter doesn't have that crisp, short throw feel, nor is getting out of 1st rarely a smooth experience. It makes you feel like a teenage kid just learning to drive a stick. I just wished that they could make a short throw shifter for our models, but from what I understand, no can do.

Okay, so I'm no expert on Manual trannys, This is my first Manual transmission and I just got the car last September .
I think tranny shifts pretty smooth with maybe sometimes I get a mechanical feel shifting from 2nd-3rd. I don't have a problem shifting at all(I don't miss shift, maybe 1/10 times),
The only other manual transmission I've driving before is a 2001 BMW M5, that thing shift like a dream, and fast as hell too. But I can't complain that about my Maxima, because I didn't pay rediculous amount of money for it.
Maybe the tranny isn't perfect, but I'm sure you can make up with good driving skills. Just my opinion

Actually 2k2, and 2k3, both feel the same..
I put lots of mileage on my cars, and both my 2k2, and 2k3 exhibit the same notichy shifting..
The IRONY is that sometimes, it shifts as smooth as silk while other times it shifts like rotton ***..

I didn't read through all the replies, but I have perfected shifting my 6spd.
Instead of pushing the clutch all the way to the floor, I only push it down till my foot hits the floor board on the left side of the pedal. You have to hang your foot off the left side of the pedal a little bit to do this.
I don't think the clutch is doing anything for the last couple inches and since the clutch is only engaging at the top half of the range, when you push it down all the way you get a jerky feeling when releasing it.
Try this, sit at the next light, and push the clutch all the way in, shift to neutral. Then move your foot so it just hangs off the left side a little bit. Push the clutch down so your foot hits the hump in the floor and clutch, shift to first. You will see when you start to release that it engages right away, like every other car you've probably driven.

The only way you grind is if you don't put the clutch in all the way when you're moving the shifter OR you release the clutch too early, before the shifter is fully in position. That being said, I've grinded maybe 2-3 times in the entire time that I've had the car, and that includes the initial learning stages (have 7500 miles now).
My biggest beef w/it is the lack of consistent engagement. Seriously, it feels like I can have the same movement of my left foot while letting up the clutch, and giving approx. the same amount of gas (by the way, getting it to rev exactly the same all the time is almost impossible because of the electronic throttle control), and it will uptake differently--sometimes jerks, sometimes smooth as silk.
I've driven my friend's Mitsu Lancer OZ, and the clutch/tranny there makes for consistent smooth starts, unless you eff something up.
My notchiness has definitely gotten better as the miles racked up. At about 2-3k miles, the notchiness was practically gone. It's still there at 7500 miles, but nothing that bothers me too much.
Also, having to wait for the revs to drop when shifting at higher rpms blows big time! That right there takes away the sportiness from the car.

I've had this car for 2 weeks now and I dont have any problem with its drivability, I love the way it shifts and I love to shift it. I drove a manual-SHO for about 2 years and this car is way better than that one was. A little notchiness never killed anyone.

You CAN adjust the clutch engagement point. There is an adjustment under the dash where the pedal linkage goes thru the firewall.
The 5 th gen clutch is a bit touchy but quite smooth if learned.
I have a aftermarket heavy clutch in my C5 and that one is no way smooth.

So I brought it in last thursday to get replaced and it's still in the shop (Monday) and i'm wondering why.
