replace gear select cover
Just put a big gouge in that silver plastic piece that covers the gear selector on the center console of my 200 SE. I'll spend the 85$ for a new one but I refuse to give the dealer another 85$ to put it in. Looks like I have to take out the whole center console armrest thing to get at this but I've never been comfortable working with the interior trim panels and stuff. I don't know how those clips work and I don't want to do any more damage taking this out. Can anybody help me out here with like an idiot's guide step by step for this cause that's what I need!
thanks

Ummm....isn't this just one piece? You're talking about the trim around the gear shifter, right? If so, there's no need to remove the whole center console....just lift the trim around the edges and feed it over the shifter. You may have to put the car in gear to feed it over.

Probably going to have to remove the center console, which is not really a big deal. It seems you could simply remove the **** by removing the two screws on the backside, slide the silver plastic up and off and install new piece in reverse. However, the OD wires will prevent the **** from coming off. I think you'll have to get down there and disconnect the OD wires just to get the **** out of the way to even think about replacing that plastic piece.
The silver plastic piece will pop right off once you get up under it. If I recall, it did not easily just pop off from the top but once I got more underneath it, where I could see how it was attached, it seemed to not be that difficult.
Sorry, but I don't have pictures on how to get down in there but I can say there are some screws in the back seat area, some screws underneath the CD thingy (inside the compartment), some screws behind the change holder/cell phone holder/ash tray, and some screws on the side of the console around your shins, not to mention the screws on the **** itself. Lift the back of the console up first (from the backseat), once all screws are removed, then pull the front part out.

If you have a 2003 there is no OD button. The shift *** is easy to remove just like a manual, unscrew it counter clockwise. As to getting the plastic shift cover off, I couldn't get it off either. If you get it off let us know how you did it.
