Who would be interested ???
Hey guys, let say I would offer you guys to chrome whatever you want ( anything that fit into a 4-5 gallon bucket ), I 'm in the process of buying the entire equipments, a sandblasting cabinet with the compressor. I will also acquire a hard chrome system, so basically I'd be able to clean any parts, removing paint, rust and dirt and then chrome process it, I'd be able to chrome almost anything, plastic, metal, cast iron... I also look at offering other services as well, anodizing, ceramic coating, powder coating.
To be honest I own a business for a little over 15 years and about 2 weeks ago my biggest competitor came to me and offer to buy my business, which was not for sale, apparently he's ready to pay the price I ask for, anyway he is supposed to make me an offer in the next few days. If I sell my business, then I'll have a decent amount of money to start something else, I have been passionate about cars since I was very young so for me that would be like a dream come thrue, and I was thinking about doing this for quite sometime, but no matter what happend with my actual business, I'm willing to spend the money and see how well I can do, even if it end up like a hobby. I would like to have your input snd see what you think, do you think there is a good market for this kind of works.
I would probably have everything ready around mid december and start producing mid january, I want to chrome as much as I can in my max engine bay so I can show you what we will be able to do for you guys.
Cheers

Hey K pazzo, I think I'll be able to make incredible price, price that will make you want to chrome everything in your engine bay, but first I need to finish my set-up and order all the equipments. A website will be set-up in the first quarter of 2004, with as many pics as we can take of our first mission. My first mission is to chrome eveything we can in my max engine bay as well as my brake caliper assembly and all the parts we feel would look nicer, for the first 3 months we are going to do a lot of testing. I did not mention in the first post, but ceramic coating is one of the process we will offer next year.
Can wait to show you the result.

Tell me about it, winter is coming so living in the south would be great, specially in the upcoming months. You can drive, from Florida it's only 28 hours. Seriously everything can be ship for fairly cheap these day. I will be building the room next week-end, and if I sell the biz next week the week after I will order everything I need.

AA - Just curious...how would you go about chroming plastic? I thought the process involved heat that would melt the plastic on contact.

Sounds good AA I can think of a few things I'd like to plate. The Frt can be a pain though. If your business gets bought what do you have that would keep you in Canada? I thought your taxes sucked worse than ours.

That's what I did with my first grill, and it doesn't last very long.

The tax suck but everything is so cheap, house, food, we dont pay for healthcare.
It's not easy to move in the state, the paper work is a pain, unless your rich. All my friend and family are here, and winter is not that bad, skying and snowmobile is quite fun actually. If I'd be rich I'd move right away and bring my family and friends.

I can't ski, knees, but I loved snowmobiling. I grew up in Chicago and live in Atlanta now. As much as like doing a few winter things I must say I don't miss the winters one bit. I can always go back but I still try to do it late May thru early Sept.

Painting the part with a conducting paint is a good idea but wouldn't the plastic still have to be pretty durable at elevated temps. Especially given that it has to be plated twice.
I know the surface temp doesn't get high for long but it's enough that when I get self-drilling screws plated zinc they have to be baked after plating to relieve surface stresses and avoid hyrogen embrittlement in the parts.
I would also think any air pockets near the surface of the plastic would be prone to popping when super heated, which would leave little pits...
A company doing this in production would most likely have specific types of plastic that they use and have tight standards in place for the injection molding line. With constant QC'ing done through out the process.

After spraying with a conductive paint, the next step is to copper plate it, ( flash copper ) the copper plating is done with very small voltage, so it will not melt the plastic and it will actually create a heat resistant layer, then the piece is ready to final chrome plating. There is a new system call Sylvachrome it is very close to chrome. We have to spray 2 products at the same time with a special spray gun that has 2 nozzles, it is very very close to chrome and it's not like the fake chrome paint, it is very reflective, it's a technology that exist since long time but was re-adapted, the old tehcnology was use to make the reflective part on a mirror many year ago.

One of the way to avoid the hydrogen bubble to contact the part is to keep the solution in a continuous flow, with a some sort of shaker that is place in the plating tank, and removing the left over bubble at the surface with a big spoon will insure any that there is none left. It's a process that need to be very meticulous but the result can be incredible.

Interestingly enough, I've been thinking a lot about chroming some of the interior parts...door handles, a/c ducts, etc. If you CAN chrome plastic, then I am SO there. If not, then I prolly won't be interested.
I suggest you start taking everyone's email addresses and updating them? I don't always keep track of the threads.

I suggest that everyone who's interested in this thread, to send me an e-mail at: dblea@videotron.ca
It will be easier to keep everyone aware when my work will start.
You can also let me know what you eventually like to have chromed.
Thanks to all.
